IRAQ OFFICIAL: MILITANTS HOLD 100S OF YAZIDI WOMEN

BAGHDAD (AP) The spokesman for Iraq's human rights ministry says hundreds of women from the Yazidi religious minority have been taken captive by militants from the Islamic State group.
Kamil Amin says the women are below the age of 35 and some are being held in schools in Iraq's second largest city, Mosul. He said the ministry learned of the captives from their families.
Tens of thousands of Yazidis fled when the Islamic State group earlier this month captured the northern Iraqi town of Sinjar, near the Syrian border. Amin's comments were the first Iraqi government confirmation that some women were being held by the group. The Yazidis practice an ancient religion that the Sunni Muslim radicals consider heretical.

(2,060 posts)the attack, the fate of these people may be far worse than had the US not attacked.

(95,247 posts)'Amin's comments were the first Iraqi government confirmation that some women were being held by the group. On Tuesday, Yazidi lawmaker Vian Dakheel made an emotional plea in parliament to the Iraqi government to save the Yazidi people, saying the "women have been sold in a slavery market."'
This is not some sudden reaction to bombing this morning; this is what has already happened, what people are fleeing, and have been fleeing for a while.
These women were kidnapped days before President Obama announced the US response to the impending genocide of the Yazidi people.
Ya know, not everything is the fault of the US, despite your hoping it is.

(39,313 posts)That was stated elsewhere. More likely is to use them as hostages unless ultimately they don't care about ethnicity.

They are capable of any atrocity.
Reports now that new strikes have killed ISIS fighters. Let's hope that some desert the cause when they see that.

(1,986 posts)There is no such thing. Every air strike is a potential atrocity.

Today, it is restricted to very few groups with one subset of one large group responsible for nearly all such cases.

If a lot of fundies die in the process, so much better for the world...

(2,161 posts)Those poor women, this is beyond horrific. I expect they will be forced to convert to Islam and taken as wives, perhaps second wives. If they don't speak the words of adopting Islam, they will be killed.
If they are ever rescued, they will likely be killed by their families upon their return, perhaps in the public square of their village. To preserve the family 'honor.'

A 2007 Guardian article about how the treatment of women in Iraq has gotten more savage and brutal after the US invasion, during the US occupation (of course it has only gotten worse and worse):
Freedom lost
After the invasion of Iraq, the US government claimed that women there had 'new rights and new hopes'. In fact their lives have become immeasurably worse, with rapes, burnings and murders now a daily occurrence. By Mark Lattimer

My heart weeps for the women of Iraq.

(19,253 posts)Considering that ISIS is content to starve/dehydrate 40,000 men, women and children to death on a mountaintop, them taking women as captives for hostages/comfort wives is completely believable.
