Amanda Curtis wins Montana Democratic nomination to U.S. Senate

Source: The Missoulian

Montana Democrats on Saturday selected Amanda Curtis to represent their party in this fall's face for the state's open seat in the U.S. Senate.

Party members gathered in Helena for the nominating convention after Sen. John Walsh dropped out of the race following revelations that he plagiarized a research paper while earning his master's degree at the Army War College.

The convention is still in progress.

she represents a fraction of the state while her opponent represents the entire state, the state tilts heavily GOP for the Presidential, and she is likely to be outspent.

describe her as Montana's "Elizabeth Warren." DFA is beginning to ramp up financial support for her at the national level but haven't yet seen anything yet on the site itself about that. Having Howard Dean's group in her corner bodes well for her. Very well, in fact.

She's also getting some decent publicity from ABC news: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2014/08/amanda-curtis-is-a-rare-breed-of-montana-democrat/

Her campaign is just a few days old, but Curtis has lined up endorsements from two of Montana’s largest unions and Democracy for America, a national progressive group that wasn’t involved in Walsh’s re-election race.

“She’s refreshing, she’s a woman and she’s an educator,” Montana State University political scientist David Parker said. “She gets Democrats excited about voting.”

Jon Tester (D), Montana's other Senator (basically on the conservative side), has also strongly endorsed her. Frankly, liberal Montanans were never excited about Walsh.

The mere fact that TP conservatives really hate her, characterizing her as a "socialist," is likely to get a LOT more people out to vote for her than would have done for Walsh, about whom feelings were "meh." http://freebeacon.com/politics/montana-dems-replace-plagiarist-with-socialist-in-senate-race/

Having just returned from the state and as a born, raised and mostly educated in-state Montanan, I would not dismiss her candidacy too quickly. Montana is, after all, the state that sent Jeannette Rankin to the US Congress before women were even allowed to vote at the national level. MT is also the state of the wonderful Mike Mansfield, whom I had the privilege of knowing and to whom the adjective "maverick" applied in the most positive fashion. http://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/06/us/mike-mansfield-longtime-leader-of-senate-democrats-dies-at-98.html
