5 killed, 13 injured after motor home crash on I-35

Source: KCTV

OSAGE COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -
A beautiful warm April Fool's Day morning turned into a nightmare when a motor home carrying members of a moto-cross racing family lost control on Interstate 35 and plunged down a ravine.

Five people have died and three others have life-threatening injuries after a motor home crashed along Interstate 35 near Williamsburg, KS, on Sunday in Osage County.

Five were killed and 13 injured, authorities say. Three of those injured suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash just southwest of Williamsburg in Osage County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the motor home with the 18 people on board hit a guard rail then a concrete bridge rail before flipping and plunging 30 feet down a ravine about 9 a.m. Sunday. This occurred on I-35 near mile marker 167, three miles south of Williamsburg. A highway sign for Tequa Creek was strewn among the debris.

2. If they were coming from Texas, they had been on the road for at least 6 hours

This happened at 10:00 this morning. So they had been on the road since maybe 4 am?

Sounds like a tired driver maybe.

And the vehicle just sounds odd. Is that even legal?

6. It sounds like it was a Freightliner Box Truck that was converted to include housing inside

18 people sounds like WAY too many people. It's certainly not like any ordinary motor home, which have their own custom chassis and usually have certain requirements they have to meet. This sounds like a cheap work around.

Horrific accident regardless.

Sometimes I don't see so well so sometimes I use the zoom on my browser. I'd swear I saw I saw one of the victim's face in one of the photos. Really I didn't need (or want) to see that.....

Doesn't he need a CDL for something that big??

Adam Kerber was behind the wheel of the Freightliner truck when it broke through a guardrail and went into a ravine Sunday morning near Williamsburg, about 70 miles southwest of Kansas City, Mo.
Minnesota authorities say Kerber's license includes several restrictions, including that all occupants of his vehicle wear seat belts where available. Only two of the 18 people aboard were belted in, but it wasn't clear if belts were available for those passengers riding in the trailer.

Can you imagine the guilt this 17 year old could carry for the rest of his life?? Because some stupid adult decided he was capable of driving this vehicle?
