NBC News reported on its website Tuesday that an American who had gone to Iraq to fight in the ranks of the Islamic State was killed over the weekend.
Photos of the passport and body of Douglas McAuthur McCain, of San Diego, have been seen by NBC News, who wrote that he was identifiable by a distinct neck tattoo.
According to an activist linked to the Free Syrian Army who also saw the body and travel documents, McCain was among three foreign jihadis fighting with the Islamic State who died.
The State Department was not immediately able to comment on the report. U.S. officials have said a small handful of Americans are believed to be fighting with ISIS, another common acronym for the Islamic State.

The reason I didn't link to NBC is that if you go there, you'll run into an autostart video that begins with an advertisement. I don't like those. At all.

(19,251 posts)McCain went to HS in Robbinsdale. How many guys could there be in Syria wearing sweaters from a small Minnesota school?

It would be one thing to literally sell your country out, as in being a corrupt douchebag - at least that could be understood as weakness. But to actually choose, based on intrinsic feelings, something that is nothing but hate and ugliness is inexplicable.
This sounds like the timely death of a colossal jerkoff.

(3,317 posts)this story seems to be just the same sensationalistic crap as the other one. At least some reports voice a little scepticism about the various claims while others report them as facts, although they cannot possibly know anything definite. Are there different persons with the same name? Why would a University student necessarily be "well-off"? This person was apparently living in Cairo, which is a far cry from a posh "£1million former west London home", the false spin you were buying into without questioning it.
As a multilingual student, he then went to Ain Shams University for a Law degree, which he completed in 2013.
While another Egyptian twitter user said the guy [Yaken] studied engineering in Ain Shams, traveled to Syria to join ISIS. Ain Sham is an incubator [for jihadist activity], another wrote.
Despite the seriousness of the story, some were skeptical of its authenticity.
People are actually buying the Islam Yaken c**p? one said, and another added the whole Islam Yaken story is too d**n funny/scary.

That these groups exist is bad enough, why can't we at least try and figure out what really motivates someone to join them, why pass on pointless rumors instead?
