Gays to march in NYC Parade: Cardinal Dolan 2015 Grand Marshal

Source: Irish Central

A gay group of employees from NBC will march in next year’s New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade behind their own banner, a source with knowledge of the ongoing parade controversy has told the Irish Voice.

On Wednesday, September 3, at a reception at the New York Athletic Club, Cardinal Timothy Dolan will be named as the grand marshal of the 254th St. Patrick’s Day parade, set to step off on Tuesday, March 17.

In an historic move aimed at defusing the storm that erupted this year over the exclusion of gay banners in the march, the addition of a banner identifying gay NBC staffers is a compromise forged at the insistence of several New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee members, including Dr. John Lahey, president of Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, and Francis X. Comerford, chief revenue officer for NBC-owned TV stations.

NBC, the long-time broadcast home of the St. Patrick’s Day parade, was prepared to drop its coverage unless a compromise that resulted in the inclusion of a gay group was brokered.

I have absolutely no damn use for any of the hierarchy that continues to refuse to release all of their secret files and have used every slimy trick to avoid compliance. The only thing that care about is their assets and don't give a damn about the those whose lives were in far too many cases destroyed. I am speaking from actual personal knowledge of some who were sexually abused. One of whom committed suicide. A bit insensitive. Not in the least.

Indeed, gays have marched in the parade since there were gay Irish in NYC. This, however, is the first time that an organization that is Irish and GLBT-identified are marching under their own banner. It's huge; especially since the parade organizers, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, is generally pretty conservative; lots of member overlap with the Knights of Columbus.

The NEWSFLASH is an Irish GLBT group is marching under their own banner in the NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade...with the Cardinal/Archbishop of NY as the Grand Marshal of said parade. Other similar groups will be welcomed to apply going forward instead of being turned away.

Huge, and well past time.
