Pete Ricketts has won the right to have his new running mate State Auditor Mike Foley on the November ballot.
Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale announced this afternoon that, despite a deadline in state law, he will allow Ricketts to drop former Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann from the ballot.
Gale indicated it did not make sense to force Ricketts to run with a running mate who had already stepped down. As the state's chief election officer, Gale said, he had a duty to "insure the accuracy of the ballot and prevent voter confusion."
He also said the Ricketts camp made a persuasive argument: that Ricketts had a constitutional duty to name his lieutenant governor candidate.
