US stocks start week with slight decline

NEW YORK (AP) — The stock market is down slightly in early trading after its first weekly loss since early August.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index eased two points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,983 shortly after U.S. markets opened Monday. The S&P 500 fell 1.1 percent last week, snapping five straight weeks of gains.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 15 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,972. The Nasdaq edged down 11 points, or 0.3 percent, to 4,556.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note stood at 2.59 percent. That was down slightly from its highest level in two months late Friday, 2.61 percent.
