Exxon Mobil‘s Drilling Operations In West Africa Get Impacted By Ebola Outbreak

Source: Bidnessetc

Exxon Mobil Corporation (XOM) is expecting some of its crude and natural gas offshore drilling operations in Liberia and Nigeria to be adversely impacted by the Ebola outbreak, as stated by CEO Rex Tillerson at a press conference. The CEO spoke at the Greater Houston Partnership’s inaugural State of Energy luncheon, where he also talked about the development in Houston and energy security in North America.

The oil giant has disallowed workers from traveling to the countries impacted by the Ebola hemorrhagic fever and is also taking other preventive actions related to workers’ families, as the aforementioned countries have been heavily impacted by the pandemic.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ebola fever has been termed as the worst outbreak ever recorded, and has resulted in the deaths of around 3,400 people in Western Africa. Furthermore, the virus has now spread to the US as a person has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus in Dallas, Texas. The man traveled back to the US from Liberia last month. In Western Africa, the Ebola virus has had the worst impact on Liberia, followed by Guinea, Sierra Leone, and certain parts of Senegal and Nigeria.

The spokesperson for Exxon Mobil, Patrick McGinn, stated that the company had taken the decision a few weeks ago and therefore, it is not related to the diagnosis of the patient with Ebola virus in Dallas.

although I don't think it is going to go that high that fast... but they are setting up for "supply disruptions" as is typical when crude oil prices continue to drop (currently hovering around $90/bbl). I was heartened to see a couple of stations near me drop to $3.49 (PA has a high gasoline tax) and I know further away, it's at least 10 - 15 cents lower. Guess I should "enjoy it" while I can.

8. The shameful history of oil and gas drilling in Africa

by big oil companies like Exxon Mobil and mining companies like Newmont of minerals and gold is no different than when the Spanish destroyed the Incans and sent all their gold back to Spain. They have exploited the workers for decades and polluted an entire beautiful continent. Now they will be raising gas prices all over the world and blaming it on ebola. I wonder if anyone asked the CEO of Exxon Mobil how much they had contributed to help Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria stop this deadly virus and how many of their workers' lives they have saved.
