Study: Voter ID laws cut turnout by blacks, young

WASHINGTON (AP) — States that toughened their voter identification laws saw steeper drops in election turnout than those that did not, with disproportionate falloffs among black and younger voters, a nonpartisan congressional study released Wednesday concluded.

As of June, 33 states have enacted laws obligating voters to show a photo ID at the polls, the study said. Republicans who have pushed the legislation say the requirement will reduce fraud, but Democrats insist the laws are a GOP effort to reduce Democratic turnout on Election Day.

The report by the Government Accountability Office, Congress' investigative agency, was released less than a month from elections that will determine which party controls Congress.

The office compared election turnout in Kansas and Tennessee — which tightened voter ID requirements between the 2008 and 2012 elections — to voting in four states that didn't change their identification requirements.

To be accurate, they should not be called "Voter ID Laws," but rather "Voter Suppression Laws."

The "ID" part is a means to an end, namely the suppressing of the rights of certain groups of people to vote. As these groups are known to vote Democratic for the most part, the laws, voted in EXCLUSIVELY by Republicans, are designed to prevent the Democratic votes from being cast. If the Republicans were to stand at polling places with assault rifles and threaten the life of anyone registered as a Democrat, their actions could not be more blatant.

Because we need to folks at DU to get off their laptops and tablets and phones and help get people to the polls.

This is going to be an every: young person, black person, woman, GLBT, elderly person effort. They've chipped away at our demographics, it's been deliberate -

So everyone that CAN vote MUST be able to vote next month - or early.

Because they are the ones who are the source, and are the only ones who can provide a solution.

Note to self: Probably shouldn't hold breath.

Instead most will probably just run around exhorting people to get out the vote (on either side), pretending to do something. lol. Like that's gonna change it.
