CNN, other Turner networks removed from Dish Network

Source: Los Angeles Times

"CNN, Cartoon Network and several other Turner cable channels were removed from satellite TV giant Dish Network's systems late Monday after the two companies could not agree on a new distribution contract.

Dish said the action was taken because it no longer had permission to broadcast several Turner Broadcasting channels to its customers.

The channels include CNN, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, CNN en Español, HLN, truTV and Turner Classic Movies. The channels were in a widely distributed programming package received by the bulk of Dish's 14 million customers.

The Dish-Turner Broadcasting contract dispute is the latest in a series of escalating conflicts during the last two years that have left millions of TV viewers without access to their favorite channels.

Pay TV-companies, including Dish, are trying to hold the line on programming costs because customers have complained that their bills already are too high."

You are correct.....YUCK Reading on various forums, Dish TV is offering a $5.00 monthly discount for six months for the inconvenience. Well, Dish.....we are also talking breach of contract, since you force customers to sign a minimum two year agreement to receive various discounts up front to have access to certain channels -- INCLUDING CNN. Looks as if Dish has broken the agreement/contract so we will be calling.

They always try to under-negotiate what the other providers agree to, then dig their heels in.

I had Dish once. After my first year, the bill almost doubled. Dropped them, went to Brighthouse cable. For the same amount of channels, I paid half what I was paying for Dish.

Now, of course, I've dropped cable all together (minus my broadband connection) and built an HD antenna.

Dish TV has been no problem for us, except for the occasional rain, ice and wind storm blackout -- yet this is to be expected. However, turning off our Channels and especially CNN without warning -- and it is not connected with non-payment of services is unacceptable.

We have Comcast for the internet and receive a deep discount -- better than the years we paid for Comcast internet and cable services for -- which was too darn high.

That's what I keep telling myself. Here in NYC, we have a good choice of OTA digital channels; and the picture is actually better than watching through cable. Most of the major channel have 'split' into 1 to 4 'sub-channels', giving a much broader choice than the old analog stations. Sadly, can't break the cable habit - there are some history and science shows that are only on cable.

Are acceptable to us. Comcast plays games with your bill -- by saying one thing and six months later double or tripling the monthly amount promised. The problems with DirectTV are one of legend with three months a low rate then, smack -- triple smack increase and they are joined with AT&T in some aspect now so no thanks.

Then you can "bump or steal" TV off of a internet connection with a HDMI Cable however who would want to do that day after day --- and you are STILL PAYING someone (Comcast, Time Warner, Charter, WOW, Verizon, Etc) for the internet service usually an arm and a leg (unless one has the sweet deal we have after dropping Comcast TV/Cable, however, kept the internet service for a deep discount for 12 months).

Either way, to each their own on what they decide to do for cable/internet/tv. We would just prefer to have CNN back to the Dish Lineup, as soon as possible.

Suddenlink replaced with a bunch of crap channels, so we have been looking for shows on the Internet. Crackle, Hulu, the actual networks, including Comedy Central. When we go on Comedy Central, Viacom opens a full screen ad saying Suddenlink dropped them and we should go to Dish or whatever. This is just a taste of what is going to happen as fewer corporations own more and more access and content. We might as well learn how to use CB radios and Morse Code and talk to each other.

TCM would be at the top of my list! Sure, if I had high-speed Internet at my tiny apt-complex, I'd just stream it from their site. But, like many a landlord, he's cheap, so we all have to make do with individual satellite packages.

If Dish can't settle this, I'll be looking for some kind of broadband and dropping Dish. I'm sure they'll hate losing a long-time customer, though I will tell them why and in detail. Maybe they'll get the message and not do stuff like this in the future. Or maybe broadband will drive all of the satellite services out of business.

Now I can watch all kinds of shows - it's entertaining, and for the price, good value for the entertainment received in exchange. Considering that dinner for two can easily cost as much as the monthly cable bill (including internet, TV, HBO, DVR, basic premium channels, access to On Demand inventory), I'm sold.

Area Man Constantly Mentioning He Doesn't Own A Television
News • television • people • human interest • ISSUE 36•04 • Feb 9, 2000

CHAPEL HILL, NC–Area resident Jonathan Green does not own a television, a fact he repeatedly points out to friends, family, and coworkers–as well as to his mailman, neighborhood convenience-store clerks, and the man who cleans the hallways in his apartment building.

Jonathan Green, who tells as many people as possible that he is "fully weaned off the glass teat."

"I, personally, would rather spend my time doing something useful than watch television," Green told a random woman Monday at the Suds 'N' Duds Laundromat, noticing the establishment's wall-mounted TV. "I don't even own one."

According to Melinda Elkins, a coworker of Green's at The Frame Job, a Chapel Hill picture-frame shop, Green steers the conversation toward television whenever possible, just so he can mention not owning one.

"A few days ago, [store manager] Annette [Haig] was saying her new contacts were bothering her," Elkins said. "The second she said that, I knew Jonathan would pounce. He was like, 'I didn't know you had contacts, Annette. Are your eyes bad? That a shame. I'm really lucky to have almost perfect vision. I'm guessing it's because I don't watch TV. In fact, I don't even own one."

from Time Warner, and it's perfectly fine for the price, but last Christmas, in response to FiOS competition which was newly emerging in my neighborhood market, they introduced a REALLY cheap internet deal - like $21/month. I switched to that, but that's when it seemed like my service began to degrade. Perhaps it was all in my head, and I wasn't really EAGER to switch, but FiOS introduced a terrific double play offer last summer - and I felt like I just HAD to give it a try, particularly because this was a "no commitment/month to month" package.

They did not rip out any wires, or switch boxes, or anything - they simply installed a new utility box, and gave me a modem, and voila. Internet is as fast as ever, TV is fun and I have so many choices.

LOL, when I told my friends, they were envious. Even the ones with full packages from other providers.

I have Verizon for copper phone and DSL. I would pay the extra for FIOS internet but they keep saying when they add the FIOS line they will switch my phone to FIOS. I have explained to them that I want to keep the copper line for a very rare emergency but the "order"/customer service people will have none of it. They act like it is impossible to keep copper phone and have FIOS for other services--I know this is not true. Whenever I actually have a copper line tech come to the house they are always agreeable, but the customer service department is hellbent on getting everyone off copper. They will eventually win, once they get a sufficient percentage of customers on FIOS but it still makes me angry that I have to spend half an hour of listening to sales pitches to get my phone line cleared up.

I thought I saw a FIOS internet/tv bundle recently and couldn't find anything in the fine print that said I had to give up my copper line. I didn't bother to call because of past experiences where they flat out told me that I couldn't do it. I'll keep an eye out on their site and research others' experiences. I just haven't had much luck any time I called. I just give up and tell them to fix my copper line because they are regulated to do it. The problem with going all FIOS is they are not regulated and they can decide to charge whatever they want, fix it whenever they want and decide what is acceptable service. Copper lines are different and they are regulated on price and maintenance responsibilities.

I'm glad to know that Verizon can indeed add FIOS without cutting copper phone lines, whether they are willing to do it here remains in doubt but I will feel more confident the next time I get the sales pitch.

Thanks again.

You can increase your pool of programming on your pc by subscribing to a service that allows you to use DNS servers from other countries such as IPVanish. (There are many such services out there - IPVanish is the one I subscribe to.)

The quality of reporting and presentation is so much better than anyone else! And no overblown graphics everywhere

WTF?

TCM is one of the very top channels. We appreciate the old movies.

I left Dish to begin with because they dropped the Big Ten Network temporarily. And they had problems with the CBS local affiliate.

Hey, Dish, wake up now before it is too late!

I hate Time Warner. We really had plans to change back to Dish. Not now.

60. If they don't resolve the dispute and bring back CNN, TCM, and Cartoon Network

(which I watch from time-to-time, especially TCM) will they then decrease my monthly statement? I won't hold my breath, as they've removed channels before like ESPN Classic (I used to love watching historic boxing matches and am a big boxing fan) and then actually increased my monthly fees. I've had complaint after complaint regarding Dish. Just last week they ended my old receiver's operation and forced me to accept a new one and refused to explain why. They've blacked out football games on NFL Network in my area when they should have been broadcast and admitted their error when I called to complain, but not cut even a penny from my bill. I called twice to ask them if they ever transmitted complaints about programming to the movie channels they carry and negotiate with, as to why the selection gets worse and worse each passing year. I have virtually every movie channel carried by Dish and they've turned to absolute shit, showing the same old revolving set of old chestnuts month after month. I was treated like crap by the dish supervisor I spoke to, telling me their relationship to the movie channels relates only to financial negotiations, not quality of programming.

I hate Dish with an absolute passion. They're shit from my ass. The only movie channel that didn't show repeats all week and month long was turner Classic Movies. Will dish lower my monthly bill if they don't offer TCM, CNN, and the rest? Or will they unjustly enrich themselves with another rate increase? I didn't have time today but tomorrow I'm going to the computer store to see if there's a device I can buy to watch internet movies on my TV set and if so, then it's by-bye assholes at Dish.
