(12,008 posts)I don't know if it's on the internet anywhere, but there was a show that aired which played back-to-back the full interview he did with a Chinese premier and the edited version that went out on 60 Minutes. It was a complete hatchet job. They cut out entire answers to make it seem like no answer was given and replaced some answers with those that were given to other questions. They'd take a shot of the premier nodding to something else and play it while Wallace was making some bull-shit anti-communist point. Ever since I saw that, I had no respect for Wallace or for 60 Minutes.

(26,877 posts)It was a half-hr program he hosted in the early 60's, and they used to show repeats on WPIX Saturday mornings in the mid-70's.
Not to mention his 60 minutes career, of course.
Cross gently, Mike. Thank you for too much to name.

(6,036 posts)How many times did we see some corrupt CEO or politician's arse get handed to him by Wallace on 60 Minutes? More times than we can count, surely. He was one of the good ones who was a real Journalist, with a capital J, not like the infotainment news readers we have nowadays.
RIP Mr. Wallace. Thank you for sticking up for truth.

I used to love Martin Short's sweaty guy who smoked nervously, Nathan Thurm, who was modeled on people Wallace (I believe it's Harry Shearer playing him) put on the hot seat!

(54,405 posts)So many have gone in the last 20 years, and no true giants to replace them.
My father was one of those giants, and when DC types ask me why I didn't try to follow
him, I said it was asking too much of me to fill those shoes. Chris Wallace is a shining
example of what I'm talking about. Helen Thomas, the last journalistic giant of my father's
generation that I keep in touch with, tried to encourage me to take my dad's place, but
I wasn't foolish enough to think I had his stuff. That's the trouble with journalism in the
States these days. NO ONE has the stuff, or if they do, they don't get a chance to show
it. MSNBC has a few with the passion and the brains, but they do mostly commentary
and interpretation. I'd trust Rachel Maddow to do it, but she "loves her job," and I don't
blame her for sticking where she is. So would I in her place!
These days we're stuck with hacks like Wolf Blitzer and the "most blah political team on
television." In fairness, I happen to know from some from CNN that Blitzer HATES being
forced to say that.
Christiane Amanpour is the closest thing CNN has to a real journalist, and she's British.

She's not always impartial, but most reporters aren't--they have biases, it's just that some are better at hiding them than others. Mike Wallace wasn't unbiased, certainly, Dan Rather isn't either. She isn't afraid to go into a hot zone, either.
They're putting some footage of Wallace up on the networks now, and discussing his legacy, good stuff.

She went to Iranian grammar schools before she was shipped off to boarding school in UK, and was raised in the Persian culture as a child. She's fluent in Farsi.
She's Persian as much as she is British--she's also not stupid, it's not popular to be Persian in some corners, these days.

(12,041 posts)It will not exactly make you think highly of Mike Wallace, but it really shows how the news was manipulated at 60 Minutes. It has an excellent script, an amazing cast led by Al Pacino and Russell Crowe, and a very powerful message about how the media manipulates what we hear and destroys peoples lives in the process.
Mike Wallace is portrayed by Christopher Plummer and he comes off very badly in the movie so I am sure Wallace would not like me recommending it, but you should watch it anyways because it is one of my all time favorite movies.

Then a few weeks ago she told her daughter that she was planning her own birthday. When asked what, she said "A funeral" Her funeral will be held next Saturday when we had planned her 100th birthday party. She was a wonderful lady. We will miss her.
