LOS ANGELES (AP) Los Angeles area authorities say they're looking for a motorist who crashed into three teenage girls trick-or-treating in Halloween costumes, leaving them with fatal injuries and fleeing the scene.
The 13-year-old girls, including twin sisters, were in a crosswalk near an elementary school in Santa Ana when the SUV with two men inside hit them at about 6:45 p.m. Friday, police and fire officials said.
Two of them were declared dead immediately, and a third died as paramedics prepared to take her to a hospital, Orange County fire Capt. Steve Concialdi said. Their names were not immediately released.
The scene was "very sad," he said, "when millions of children, teenagers and adults are out trick-or-treating on a wonderful evening to insert tragedy like this."

(13,618 posts)I saw a close on a week or so ago. In the morning with a group of kids in a crosswalk. I was still a ways away from the crosswalk and was just slowing way down, timing it to take off again and not have to stop but an oncoming car driven by an old lady just kept right on coming. One of the kids was paying attention and saw her just in time and yelled something. They actually had to dodge her! She didn't even appear to have seen them, let off the gas or hit the brakes at all.
I've had that happen a bunch of times and it really pisses me off. Partly because I stop and the oncoming car blows through keeping the pedestrian waiting along with me. So I may as well have just gone on by too if I was willing to risk a ticket. Not too long ago a woman did that and what she saw going by me was my middle finger almost hitting her mirror! I've also had to hit the horn to warn kids when an idiot was blowing by me from behind.
In some cases like early in the morning and I'm the only car on the road, I see someone at the crosswalk and I'll admit I just go right by if I know no cop can be watching. If I'm walking in that situation and see someone slowing down, I'll wave them by. Ridiculous is ridiculous. No way a car should have to stop in a situation like that.

(7,908 posts)and tablets have become the rage. (Actually, cell phones were when I first started noticing the problem worsening and that would have been around 1999-2000, IIRC.)
Nothing I can quantify with data or anything, more based on my anecdotal experiences driving around SoCal.

(3,998 posts)The cell phones and texting while driving has made it worse. I see people making left turns in intersections while on the phone. People backing out of parking spaces....on the phone. Crazy! What the hell is so important that you can't wait a few minutes? The streets are much more busy, too. I've been here 50 years so I can really see the difference!

(859 posts)To kill 3 people with 1 care seems like they would have had to have tried to do it.
I know that alot of drivers speed up if they think the pedestrian is somehow in the wrong even children.
