Rauner declares victory, Quinn won't concede (IL gov.)

Source: Chicago Tribune

Republican Bruce Rauner claimed victory Tuesday night in the Illinois governor race as voters moved to end a dozen years of one-party Democratic rule following a vicious campaign that set records for political fundraising.

“This is your victory. This is a victory for every family in Illinois,” Rauner told cheering supporters gathered at the Chicago Hilton and Towers.

The Republican said the election was “a historic time in Illinois,” adding that he had placed phone calls to House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton — two Democrats he vilified during the campaign as part of a “corrupt” political system controlling Springfield.

“I said to them this is an opportunity for us to work together, this is an opportunity for us to come together on a bipartisan basis,” Rauner said as some in the crowd booed the mention of the Democratic leaders.
