The Lawyer For A Football Player Accused Of Rape Exposed The Woman’s Name On Twitter
Source: Thinkprogress.org
It is standard practice for media outlets, police reports, and attorneys involved in sexual assault and rape cases to avoid names of victims. The Florida State case would seem especially sensitive, given its high-profile nature and the scrutiny his accuser has already faced on campus, online, and in other public forums (multiple students at Florida State told ThinkProgress in September referenced the victim-shaming that took place on campus in the wake of the allegations).
This is not the first time Cornwell has used the name of Winstons accuser publicly. According to the Orlando Sentinel, he has done so multiple times in the past because he believes her sexual assault claims have been proven unfounded by the state attorneys decision not to pursue charges.

Even Pamela Mackey might find this tactic laughable.
When will we see the SNL skit similar to this:
Remember this:
Kobe's lawyer flooded with calls after SNL skit
Tina Fey, the comedienne who serves as co-anchor on the show's satirical "Weekend Update" newscast, took aim at Mackey's apparent slipups during Bryant's preliminary hearing Thursday on a charge of sexual assault.
"The preliminary hearing in Kobe Bryant's rape trial turned ugly when Pamela Mackey, Bryant's lawyer, accidentally said his accuser's name in court, violating Colorado privacy laws," Fey said.
"And after being admonished by the judge," Fey continued, "Mackey went on to repeat the woman's name five times. Which is really bad, 'cause what lawyer Pamela Mackey did by mentioning the woman's name, is to put her at risk of further harassment. A lawyer - like Pamela Mackey of the Colorado firm Haddon, Morgan, Mueller, Jordan, Mackey and Foreman, which is probably in the 303 area code - should know that people can look up a name, like Joe Smith or Pamela Mackey, on the Internet and learn everything about them."
I guess it was a different time back then.

(297 posts)I've followed the case closely and almost certainly this is a false accusation. I don't get why we can smear his name all over the place and she gets a free pass.

(12 posts)It does look highly doubtful that anything other than consensual sex occurred.
I would prefer a system where both the accuser and accused's identities are protected until actual charges are filed and an arrest is made. It would provide for less of an incentive to out the identity of the accuser out of either the frustration or vindictiveness of those sympathetic to an accused who is getting eviscerated in the public eye.

In theory, I would be ok with both identities being kept protected until charges come up. But much like the Steubenville, OH rape case awhile back, there would likely have been no charges at all if the case hadn't got media attention.
