Sean Patrick Maloney Is The First Openly Gay Man Elected To Congress From New York

Source: Huffington Post

By Sam Levine

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.) defeated former Rep. Nan Hayworth (R) in a rematch of the same race two years ago in New York's 18th congressional district.

The race was one of the most competitive in the state. Hayworth held the seat from 2010 to 2012, but lost to Maloney after the boundaries of the district were redrawn. Maloney, who narrowly beat Hayworth in 2012, received help during his campaign from Hillary Clinton, who traveled to his district to stump for him.

Last week, Hayworth released a campaign ad featuring her gay son, who told voters that his mother was "not an extremist." The ad drew criticism from LGBT groups, who said that Hayworth did not do enough to support pro-LGBT legislation while in office.

Maloney is the first openly gay man to be elected to Congress from New York.
