AP: Shumlin up 2,095 votes with all precincts reporting (Vermont governor)

The 2014 governor's race turned Tuesday into something few predicted for a two-term incumbent Democrat running for re-election in an increasingly Democratic state: It was too close to call as the day ended.
Both Republican candidate Scott Milne and incumbent Democrat Peter Shumlin said they would wait for the final numbers Wednesday morning before making more statements.
"What is clear is that the majority of Vermonters do not agree with the path that we are on. We are going to wait for the final numbers," Milne said. "I am incredibly grateful to all of the Vermonters who cast their ballots on my behalf yesterday. I owe it to my supporters and all Vermonters to see the totals before we make any further statements," Milne said. Earlier Milne said the nearly 2,000 vote difference seemed "insurmountable."
An Associated Press tally early Wednesday afternoon, with all Vermont precincts reporting, had the governor up by 2,088 votes over Milne. The AP total had Shumlin with 89,874 votes and Milne with 87,786 votes. Libertarian candidate Dan Feliciano tallied 8,468 votes, according to the AP.

He said everyone would have cell and Internet coverage by 2010, yet so many spots are lacking still. He also wanted to have all people file their taxes via the Internet in a state with a lot of older folks who don't even own a computer and areas lacking wifi coverage. And he's from out of state (not a true Vermonter), just greasing his wheels up the power structure that he wanted to do... When he represented the Wyndham Co, he did so little for people in that county, you would think he represented the Northern counties near the Canada border. My mom didn't bother voting because she just doesn't like him. He's only winning because of the D behind his name. An R in VT wouldn't even dare try to do some of the crap they try in other states. If he did, man it would get nasty fast for him.

(114,904 posts)In a state this small, too many people actually know him and know how arrogant he is. Also, the 2013 story about how he took advantage of a mentally disabled neighbor in a property deal, was definitely a factor. That really didn't sit well with a a lot of people. btw, it's Windham County, not Wyndham.

(12,233 posts)he was a native Vermonter or an import.. However, it doesn't change his nature one bit.. And yes, in a small state, people know him too well on his "personal" side. The only saving grace to him was the D behind his name. If more people thought anything about him, they would have voted. My mom and dad normally do vote, but skipped it this year... AND my mom works in the school where the voting booths are locates; literally can't get any closer or more convenient than that... She's still so upset about not having internet or cell connection and can't do half her school work at home, online class work, or catch up with her grandson in FL; especially since she's been at my house and easily connects with any of her devices so easily and sees how handy it really is to have internet connections at your house. AND then regarding cell phone, she just recently had a heart attack, and then last week the regular phone line just went dead for 3 days; if something had happened to her with my dad gone to work and no close neighbors, she could be dead on the floor by the time anyone found her.
If the companies won't bring in the technology, then the state should be taking in Federal Grant money and building the infrastructure their selves. Plus, you know how many people work "specialty" types of jobs, crafting items, making anything from moose decals and t-shirts to ornate artistic items, and then there is general advertising that could help individuals market themselves to sell cords of wood for sale or roofing repairs or general contracting that would be helpful to reach people with via the internet. Between this gripe about not having sufficient technology for the demanding age of reality and the inability to capture real jobs other than tourism and farming, there isn't a lot of draw to VT or for good paying jobs in VT. But that is pretty much everywhere in the country these days. At some point they may decide to move out for good and visit back my sister...

(37,451 posts)how is he responsible if the companies (carriers) don't upgrade service. I can just hear it now when hundreds of cell phone towers begin to dot the Vermont Mountains. Nearly 100% of this lies in the laps of Congress that lets the companies write the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It gets people hackles up when they find a tower can go just about anywhere.
It sounds like he over promised? I was up in Vt during the summer and service was better on your side of the border than Ny's, at least my phone worked.
I've been responsible using preservation guidelines into getting two resighted.

I'll have to check in to see what's up with dissatisfaction - I know my family has super cheap wifi up on a mountain now. For years they only had dial up.
