GOP pads majority in officially nonpartisan Nebraska Legislature

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Martha Stoddard

Winners have emerged in two state legislative races that looked too close to call Tuesday evening.

Joni Craighead held a nearly 300-vote lead over John Stalnaker in west-central Omaha’s District 6 legislative race as of Wednesday.

She said she was “feeling pretty good” about being able to hold on for the win. Although Douglas County election officials must finish counting some 15,000 mail-in votes, she said election experts have told her it would be very difficult for those votes to change the outcome of her race.

In southeast Nebraska’s District 32, Laura Ebke had a 226-vote lead over Phil Hardenburger. She trailed him before votes began coming in from Jefferson County late Tuesday.
