ERUSALEM (AP) Israel's prime minister says he has spoken to Jordan's King Abdullah II in a bid to ease mounting tensions around Jerusalem's most sensitive holy site.
The two leaders spoke over the phone on Thursday, a day after Jordan recalled its ambassador to Israel to protest what it called an "unacceptable" Israeli police assault on a disputed hilltop compound in Jerusalem's Old City, revered by Jews and Muslims.
Violence erupted at the site Wednesday after a group of religious Jews tried to visit. Muslims consider such visits a provocation.

Clashes broke out after a Palestinian driver rammed a minivan into a crowded train station. He then backed out and proceeded to drive away, hitting several cars along the way, then got out of the car and attacked a group of civilians and police officers on the side of the road with a metal bar, killing one and wounding 13, before he was shot and killed.
