SPRINGFIELD -- Republican Ed Gillespie has conceded the U.S. Senate election, confirming that Democrat Mark R. Warner won a second six-year term.
Warner leads by 16,540 votes out of 2.18 million cast with one Albemarle County precinct out, according to the latest tally by the State Board of Elections.
....
The state's 133 local electoral boards have until Tuesday to complete the annual process of reviewing precinct results. The State Board of Elections will meet Nov. 24 to certify the final vote counts.

(115,735 posts)I've never cared much for Warner, but he's a damn sight better than that creep Gillespie.

(14,449 posts)I think Gillespie wants to run for Governor in 2017 and this was a get his name out there type race. I even think he was surprised it was so close. Virginia with one and done allows for Republicans to win Governor seats from time to time. I hope we have a good candidate for 2017.

(45,488 posts)Warner essentially ran the same campaign from the previous election. He'll take it more seriously next time, hopefully.
for Gov, I'm hoping chap Petersen runs.

(42,714 posts)Estimates are around $2 million, compared to $80 million in North Carolina. Virtually all of the ads I saw here in VA were candidate ads (and I saw more for Warner than Gillespie).

(16,399 posts)It never should have been close. The fact we had to wait three days later shows how badly our asses got whipped.

(42,714 posts)to canvas the results, no matter what. The outcome of the race was known election night. A year ago, the Democratic candidate for Virginia Atty Gen'l ended up just a few hundred votes ahead of the repub in an election with around the same number of votes cast as in the Warner/Gillespie contest. That margin stood up. Once Warner opened up a lead of a couple of thousand votes, the victory was assured. That doesn't mean that it was too close -- far closer than anyone predicted and that the closeness of the race was an indication of how badly we did on election night.
