WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. military has drawn up plans to significantly increase the number of American forces in Iraq, which now total around 1,400, as Washington seeks to bolster Iraqi forces battling the Islamic State, U.S. officials told Reuters on Friday.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, declined to offer more details. The United States aims to help advise and train Iraqi and Kurdish forces battling Islamic State fighters who swept into much of northern Iraq.

(4,144 posts)Veteran U.S. Sen. John McCain reiterated Thursday that he is "seriously considering" and "leaning towards" a 2016 re-election bid. McCain, R-Ariz., made the remarks to reporters after a breakfast meeting with political allies at the Ritz-Carlton. McCain would be 80 at the time of the 2016 election. He said he got no discouraging feedback, but added, "I tried to point out to them that we have to expect a very difficult campaign and hope that it's easy. But you always have to plan for a very, very tough campaign with good competition."
That includes a possible GOP primary challenge from the right. McCain has long been at odds with the more conservative quarters of the Arizona Republican Party, which took the extraordinary step earlier this year of censuring McCain as too liberal on issues such as immigration reform. Under the incoming Republican-controlled Senate, McCain will become the new Senate Armed Services Committee chairman. He said he interpreted Tuesday's election results as a message that the American people want Congress "to get to work, and accomplish things" http://www.azcentral.com/story/azdc/2014/11/06/mccain-leaning-towards-running-for-reelection-2016/18593861/

(59,504 posts)He just joined the SFRC in 2013 - so he is not someone with a lot of seniority on that committee. That said - in no position, other than if Obama made him Secretary of Defense, could he increase the number of troops -- and then only with Obama's approval.
