Obama authorizes 1,500 more troops for Iraq
Source: Washington Post
President Barack Obama is authorizing the U.S. military to deploy up to 1,500 more troops to Iraq as part of the mission to combat the Islamic State group.
Obama is also asking Congress for more than $5 billion to help fund the fight.
The White House says the troops wont serve in a combat role, but will train, advise and assist Iraqi military and Kurdish forces fighting IS.

(12,629 posts)I was more surprised by the fact that he is sending 1,500 more soldiers than the fact that he was sending more soldiers. When I saw that he was sending more troops to Iraq I did not expect to hear that he was sending 1,000 or more.

The question is whether this was the plan all along.
Only a Progressive Savior could rally the disaffected American public around yet another stupid military adventure.

(1,832 posts)This is his order, this is his fault and solely on him. He is the one sending us back to Iraq.....Last I checked he was still the President, and still the one ordering troops around, why are you trying to shift blame away from him?

Personally, I think the President has power but it is that of a high level employee rather than Chief Executive. I think the position is actually Senior Vice President of Marketing. Somewhere between being a Zaphod and the traditional reckoning of the job.

(4,280 posts)airplanes two nights ago. The Republicans get in charge, and what happens? I do not blame Obama for this. My gosh, look at his hair! He's getting grayer by the month, it seems. What other President has had so much opposition from the "other party" and a few from his own? I'm standing behind Obama all the way. The Dems did the country a disservice by not publicizing his many accomplishments. And, of course, our Corporate Media deserves much of the blame.
and for our troops in harm's way, again.

(1,832 posts)This is solely PBO's work. He is SOLELY ordering our forces back into Iraq, there is no Republican bad guys forcing him to do this or holding him hostage, this is ENTIRELY HIS FREAKING DOING and it is disgusting.
