Obama touts new China visa deal as way to create U.S. jobs

Source: CNBC

President Obama announced a new plan Monday to extend Chinese student visas to five years and business and tourist visas to 10 years, saying the move will boost jobs in the United States.

The visa plan was part of Obama's overall call for improved economic ties between the two nations, he said, and would help China "do well."

The visa change will also apply to U.S. citizens in China. Previously, visas were granted on a year-at-a-time basis.

Asia represents an incredible job-creation opportunity in the United States, Obama said, and that the new visa agreement could inject billions into the U.S. economy. A White House statement said by 2021, Chinese travelers to the United States will contribute nearly $85 billion a year to the economy and support up to 440,000 jobs.
Obama was in Beijing for the annual of meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit (APEC). Two rival trade agreements promoted by China and the United States are at the heart of the summit.

Will this really help create jobs, or will just make it easier to hire workers from out of the country? Serious question.

... and it flies thru Congress lickety-split, soon we'll feel the full affect of what our elected Reps, Sens and Pres have done. People don't learn in this country. Everyone knows what has happened after NAFTA, GATT and CAFTA. Jobs left the country for cheap labor. We can't work for nothing in this country because the cost of living is too high! Maybe Clinton really believed that those trade agreements would bring more jobs. If so, then HE was lied to by big business who brokered the whole mess. But, by dog, I damn sure have no faith in Trade Agreements anymore. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Look at Sam Brownback out in Kansas. He wrecked the economy of his state by giving a big tax break to the rich, then the state re-elected him! How's THAT for not learning anything?

The TPP is, in a matter of fact, removing the borders of whole countries. There will be no more Countries but only a small number of wealthy that rule the blue marble we call Earth.

That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of.

While we are at it, eating ice cream by the gallon is a great way to lose weight. Drinking whiskey until you can't stand up is a great way to get sober. Sticking your tongue into meat grinder is a great way to get a taste of raw pork. What isn't is and what is isn't. That's the Third Way philosophy right now.

By the time you feel it, you will be dead or at least unemployed and hungry.

Please tell me Obama didn't suggest this.

We seriously need to reform our party. I can't vote for this nonsense any more. It's like out of Alice in Wonderland.

Where do they think this stuff up?

go to the link and read it...that should scare the hell out of you. Just reading the bullet points doesn't even begin to describe the obnoxiousness of this deal by Obama.

here's an excerpt:

As for APEC, which China hasn't hosted since 2001, authorities took drastic measures to curb the pervasive air pollution ahead of the meeting. For 10 days, polluting factories in neighboring provinces have been shut down or scaled back operations.

Read More China and trade secrets: Not perfect, but better

Only half the city's cars are allowed on the roads each day. And many businesses and schools are closed for a week — all attempts to make the air a little cleaner as China takes the world stage hosting the summit.

"I wish we could have APEC every day," said Ma Ning, 35, whose son's kindergarten shut Friday. "The air is so clean, it shows if the government tries their best, we could have blue sky every day."

one more edit: Damn, that's the best this President sees for the future of our children & grandchildren...WTF. Pollute us and make our descendent's slaves to China. Oh well, we sold our souls long ago...I just guess Obama is paying up.

... a couple of points: This doesn't change the rules on getting a visa in the first place or how long you can stay; it just extends the period you can use the visa to enter the country without needing to renew every year. And, it's something we already do for several countries. So, I think it is a net positive to our economy if it encourages more visitors, but probably not major. Anyway, no reason for hyperventilating.

... from China for some time now. It's really an eerie sight. I don't know how they can live in it, even with paper or gas masks. That's the kind of air we would have here had Nixon not created the EPA and had we not passed the Clean Air Act. Even though they shut everything down to try to clear the it up, it didn't work. Unless they transported the President in a closed van with no windows, he seen it with his own eyes. And the Republicons want to abolish the EPA! How blatantly absurd is that?

But what exactly does "businessmen" include? I guess it would create jobs if it encourages Chinese businesses to expand in the States, hiring local workers, but if it means more imported cheap workers for US businesses, not so much.

for longer than four years. Unfortunately the universities these days are recruiting more and more international students because they pay many times more than residents and out of state students.

It is also noteworthy that this is reciprocal meaning that the same applies for Americans in China, which is typical on visas.

As for the policy, I have mixed feelings about it. How many people are going to overstay their visa? We certainly have enough to worry about immigration wise already, do we need to add more to it?

It has some slight affect, allowing businessmen and women to move back and forth between countries easier. It's a token action. Showing the handful of Chinese billionaires that fund our politics that we can make life a little easier for them as they take over our industrial capacity.
