Indian govt sending 'chilling message' on environment: Greenpeace

Source: Agence France-Presse

Moves by India's new right-wing government to block Greenpeace funds and weaken environmental protection laws send a "chilling message", the head of the lobby group said Monday, as he urged the prime minister to release the money.

<snip>

New Delhi tightened controls on foreign fund transfers to Greenpeace India in June after the Intelligence Bureau accused activist groups of "stalling development projects" by protesting against power projects, mining and genetically modified food.

"It's been a little bit of a shock to see the allegation being made that civil society is acting against the national interest," said Naidoo in an interview with AFP in New Delhi.

<snip>

India's biggest corporate groups have flocked to business-friendly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose right-wing government swept to power in May elections on a pledge to revive the ailing economy.

should get along just fine...... but they have been all along. Look at how many of our jobs are in that country. Seems like every call for service or products is picked up in India. That's just me though.

The nation is united by religion, Hindu, and by English being the official language.
There are 13 different languages spoken in India, but by junior high they all have to learn English.
They even have classes to teach American English to be able to get a job into the telephone service industry. The subscribe to American newspapers to keep abrest of local American news so, they can chat about Dallas and make it seem like the phone call is from Dallas.

The determination "racist" or "not racist" is based upon a single question "what types of people they would refuse to live next to" and naturally, insular populations who have never been exposed to another race would be phobic of the unknown.

Racism involves hate and and that is not measured by this question.

It is funny how Pakistani sites are promoting this error.

Never been exposed? They are as exposed as anyone else, global citizens and all that. Unless you mean the tendency to stay away from others because of their race, as discussed above.

They are so insular they have tens of thousands of the jobs that would have been here otherwise.

This is 2014, not 1914.

are not world travellers and 90% of them have not even left their rural district.

Just because one sees Indians in the US, Europe and Australia it is easy to forget that the ones that you see are a very very small percentage of the population.

If you did a survey in India outside of the major cities and tourist destinations and asked, "have you ever seen a white or black individual in person?" you may get 100% saying no.

In the US, for example, 46% of the population has passports and another 17% have "passport cards." In India, only about 1% of the people have passports and about 30% of them have never used it. Yes, even in 2014.

It is important to be informed instead of just shooting from the hip.

sees it with your blinders.

I'm quite comfortable with the fact that I was helping these "insular" people with their English skills in the 80's.

Shooting from the hip works just fine when one hits their target - but using one gun for every purpose like you are doing is going to create some misses.

Perhaps that is because you only see things from your own culture. Which is why I see no reason to read anything else from you.

to vacate their lands:

The Right Wingers may make a lot of money in the short run, but at the cost of destroying the Indian state in the long run.

The so called movements opposing progress and development are started by "maoists' (terrorists funded by China and Pakistani ISI) to rile up illiterate people to protest against their economic interests. Some are even started by politicians like Mamata Banerjee to extort money from corporations.

Classic example was an automobile plant proposed for the state of West Bengal by Tata. After the project was delayed and delayed due to people and leaders wanting to extract exorbitant sums of money, Narendra Modi gave land and tax breaks to bring the project to Gujrat. Within months the car factory started producing automobiles and created thousands of jobs while the stupid farmers in West Bengal saw their land drop its value by 80% and with no prospect for a job.

India is an agrarian economy and it is unsustainable as is. India has to get involved in mining, power generation and factories to put food on the tables of its people.

It is easy to espouse eco-friendliness from an office overlooking central park without understanding the ground realities in other countries.
