Arctic blast descends on Rockies, Upper Midwest

By JAMES NORD

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — After the snow comes the cold.

After being buried under more than a foot of snow, parts of the Rockies and Upper Midwest were getting their first icy touch of arctic air on Tuesday. And the rest of the Midwest and the East are expecting a dose later in the week, with temperatures forecast as much as 40 degrees below average.

The frigid air was pushed in by a powerful storm that hit Alaska with hurricane-force winds over the weekend.

A look at the storm and its effects:

I have not seen real snow but once in 30 years now.
Not complaining, mind you. Had plenty of snow as a kid in the Pac. NW, but as a working adult it was nice not to have the long winters once I moved down South.

No snow as of yet, but the weather service seems to think there is a good chance of snow and/or freezing rain in the next two days.

Today, the east wind is howling out of the Columbia Gorge, with high gusts hitting my neighborhood, and the whole area. We are under a high wind warning, with gusts up to 80 mph forecast for the west end of the Gorge and east Portland. Gusts of 65 mph and possibly higher are forecast for the northern Willamette Valley, and also west of the West Hills ( aka, Tualatan Mountains). Have spent a lot of the day sealing up air leaks in my home. Will have to wait until tomorrow to see what else Ol' Man Winter brings.
