2 workers rescued from 69th-floor scaffold at One WTC

NEW YORK -- Two window washers dangling from the 69th floor of the One World Trade Center were rescued Wednesday after fire department teams cut through glass one floor below and pulled them to safety.

A cable on the scaffolding apparently broke around 1 p.m., according to Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the building.

Spokesman Frank Dwyer saids emergency teams were in communication with the workers who were uninjured. Rescuers lowered a radio down while they were trapped in the dangerous tilting scaffold.

The rescuers cut six-foot high holes through the thick, multi-layered glass. The two workers were tethered to the scaffold and were pulled inside one by one.

People on the ground were moved back in case glass began flying. Office workers and construction workers streamed onto a nearby street, their necks craned upward to watch the scaffold as it is waved in the wind. Dozens of emergency vehicles lined the street.

If that were me, they'd have to clear the streets as a precaution against all of the vomiting I'd be doing.

I hope that it turns out ok!

They're going to have to smash one of the windows and get them inside that way. Window washing a skyscraper is a job I could never, ever do.

It's pretty windy up that high and they'd have to evacuate the street below if they had to smash. I'm going to hit the website of one of our local news stations (usually the best source for these kinds of breaking stories) and see what's up.

Window Washers Are Rescued From Scaffolding at 1 World Trade Center.

Firefighters on Wednesday afternoon rescued two window washers who became suspended 69 stories above the street while working at the newly completed 1 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan.

The workers, who were harnessed to the scaffolding of the window-washing equipment, were uninjured, according to the authorities.

Shortly before 2 p.m., fireighters could be seen cutting a hole through a window near the platform and then assembling inside, where they pulled the workers to safety.

The window washers had been lowered from the top of the building before their machine malfunctioned shortly before 1 p.m.

has some great video and stills of the rescue. It sounds like the scaffolding is still hanging there for the moment. Thankfully the washers were brought to Bellevue - they'll be well taken care of.
