AP: Taj Mahal closes Dec. 12 if union keeps appeal

Source: AP-Excite

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Trump Entertainment Resorts said Thursday it will close the Taj Mahal on Dec. 12 if its main union doesn't drop an appeal of a court-ordered savings package.

CEO Robert Griffin told The Associated Press that the company has notified the state Division of Gaming Enforcement of the planned shutdown date.

The union is appealing a bankruptcy court order that terminated the union contract, canceling health insurance and pension coverage. If the appeal isn't withdrawn by the end of the month, the casino will close and its 3,000 jobs will be lost, Griffin said.

The notice to state regulators follows a letter the company sent Monday to its employees urging them to pressure the union to drop the appeal. In it, Griffin described the company as "a very sick patient lying on his death bed." It came on the day the company originally had planned to close the Taj Mahal before extending its deadline by a month.

If this casino is that far gone, probably nothing will save it.

than in 6 months or a year, after the investors and execs suck even more out of it (before they head to their next 7 figure gig) and leave the workers with nothing, and few if any job prospects.

Atlantic City casinos aren't gonna bounce back any time soon.

The headline is designed to blame the workers who are not at fault here.

I was in Atlantic City in August; right before they closed the Rebel, Show Boat and Trump Plaza. Thousands of people have lost their jobs.

Lots of states are allowing casinos these days. No need to go to a has-been beach resort for it.

The idea that one can get back at Trump by wanting to see that casino closed is mistaken.

Is the casino fabricating? Who knows.

But the failure of other majors before it, and the ongoing downslide of A.C. would make me think in binary terms: do I want a job for another year or two, or no job? Personally, I would keep the job while I bankrolled another exit plan.

It's easy to be righteous in one's anger on the internet. Not so easy when the bills keep coming but the paycheck doesn't.
