UMass Amherst cuts ties with Bill Cosby

Source: Boston Globe

The University of Massachusetts Amherst severed its ties Wednesday to alumnus Bill Cosby, joining a growing number of colleges to distance themselves from the entertainer amid accusations he sexually assaulted more than a dozen women.

Cosby, who received a master’s and a doctorate in education from the college, was an honorary co-chairman of the school’s ongoing $300 million fund-raising campaign. He and his wife, Camille, donated several hundred thousand dollars to the school, and the comedian was frequently cited in the past as one of the university’s most notable alumni.

Just a day earlier, the state’s flagship college had said Cosby was remaining in the honorary post. But Wednesday, UMass officials asked Cosby to step down from the capital campaign, and Cosby agreed to do so, according to university spokesman Edward Blaguszewski.

“He no longer has any affiliation with the campaign nor does he serve in any other capacity for the university,” Blaguszewski said in a statement.

those he assaulted from ever bringing their charges to court, but somewhere around the 10th or 12th or 16th woman accusing him -- along with the revelation of his "comedy routine" about drugging women and having sex with them -- most of us have formed a poor opinion of his character. At the very least.

He isn't the kind of person any institution will want to represent them from now on.

Maybe it's because I'm younger (I hadn't even begun kindergarten when The Cosby Show went off the air), but I never really liked him. He was just this kind of figure that my parents and grandparents liked because he would cantankerously and constantly bitch about young peoples' attitudes and interests.

It's been speculated publicly that a lot of older white folks held him in such high regard because he was a black man complaining about the activities and attitudes of younger black people. "Bill Cosby agrees that rap music and baggy pants are ruining this country. I, therefore, cannot possibly be a racist." I am fairly confident that this is the reason that the older people who surrounded me in my formative years adored him so, even if they themselves never consciously or explicitly realized it.

had never been on a network series before, and he proved that could be done. In those years he appeared to be a very positive figure.

It was later that he started bloaviating about black people needing to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, etc.

Like many a narcissist, he apparently has no real empathy for other people. That's how he could treat all those young women as he did; and that's why he can pontificate so cluelessly about poor black people today.
