Portman Will Seek Re-Election Instead of Running for President

Source: Roll Call

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, will not run for president in 2016, and will instead plan to seek re-election to his Buckeye State Senate seat.

“With the new Republican majority, I see a real opportunity over the next two years to break the gridlock in Washington and actually get things done to help Ohioans and all Americans,” Portman said in a statement Tuesday morning. “That’s where I believe I can play the most constructive role.”

Portman’s official re-election announcement likely makes the seat harder for Democrats to pick-up in 2016. With Democratic Sen. Mary L. Landrieu projected to lose re-election in this weekend’s runoff against Rep. Bill Cassidy, Democrats will need to pick up five seats to reclaim control of the Senate.

First elected to the Senate in 2010, Portman found himself on the short list for vice president in 2012. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney ultimately selected Rep. Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., but Portman still played a role in the race by advising Romney on the campaign.

Who've we got to run against him? The slate in Ohio was pretty weak this year.

Oh please .... the gridlock was made and created by the republicans. Don't you

laid out, Rob?

3. The Democratic Party in Ohio needs rebuilt. The people in charge were inept and/or corrupt.

Maybe the national party can give Ohio some help in getting a party structure built that functions to elect Democrats rather than helping to elect Republicans.

I heard some scuttlebutt that Mike Coleman, the outgoing mayor of Columbus, might run for the Senate. He is not much better than an R. He always made sure the Wolfe family got all the public tax dollars handed to them for whatever scam they were running, but they made sure he got reelected.

Well Ohio, here a rant and here is your golden opportunity to begin the process of re-building your state from a has been operation to a economic engine it once was, thanks to some semblance of a having union(s) in your state, but since you have a right wing governor and a right wing legislature you will soon have the makings of being rated like a third world country.

What has this right wing hypocrite and his agenda really done for you in the state?

Namely has he introduced any legislation to take your tax dollars and give it back to you in the way of re-building your dangerous bridges (9.1% deemed as dangerous) and your decrepit roads or has he blamed your state and its citizens by giving your money to someone that is doing nothing except getting more wealthy and powerful.
I lets talk about your water, what has this hypocrite done in the way of you not getting a green slime on one of your great lakes, has he done anything, haven't heard a word, except he wants to attack the EPA, well I guess you better start stocking up on bottled water since you have over (7) deadly toxins in your water system and this hypocrite and your other right wing hypocrites in office have done -----NOTHING, you need water to live----duh.

How about the hunger in your state, has he taken your tax dollars to help the same neighbors that live next to you get a job so that the children that go to public schools have some semblance of food in there stomach while having around 22.4 % going hungry in your state and is rated at having around 29.4% poor and hunger at some time of the day or week, nice job, with that number, since this right wing hypocrite likes to demonetizes the poor as the problem, no, its this right wing hypocrite(s) and followers of this hypocrite's agenda like this who you re-elect that is the problem, the blame is not the poor or the middle class.

Your public education system cannot sustain creating new jobs because of the lack of funding when you have a hypocrite of this ilk voting to give corporation more welfare tax breaks to not pay taxes, look no further at your corporation there in Peebles, Ohio called GE, they have paid ZERO TAXES in the last 14 YEARS, ZERO TAXES and the wealthy keep off shoring there taxes on the profits they make, great corporate citizens the same one that good old Romney and the right wing U.S. Supreme court think they are people, use the fire and police and give nothing back in return in the total aggregate of responsibilities----right----well guess what, someone has to pay and its you and the rest of us, and this hypocrite and others of this right wing agenda like your drunk Speak of the House Boehner who has done NOTHING to make things better, except spread hate and fear to justify there hypocrisy and deflect there right wing creed of disdain of more blame game to get re-elected, no wonder your state is a failure in everything.

Just to give you an example in the twisted logic of responsibility how much does your football coach at the University there in Ohio make when compared to the tuition parents have to pay to get in there children in the university on there salary?
Do you see a pattern here?

Your news media should be challenging this right wing hypocrite every day on these issues and more. But just like the 12 year KID that was killed in a Cleveland Park by two police officers shows and says something, that video is really disturbing.
You have the same issues like the incident that transpired in Ferguson, shoot first and ask questions later, and when nothing is found out to the so called justification of the killing of that young man or kid, your news media is saying nothing or investigating---why?
Your police go after the father of the kid to smear the situation in some form to justify the actions of the police---see a possible pattern here, guess what, his father had nothing to do with this killing it was two police officers, who screamed up and supposedly yelled something, when the evidence shows otherwise, why did they not park on the street when they came to the gazebo, and get out of there squad car and say "PUT YOUR HANDS UP". are the police that paranoid?

Just think he (Portman) was on a "short" list for a right wing hypocrite (Romney 47% who likes to milk the so called tax system to his benefit and shift the burden on all of us and then deflect his wealth in earned income tax credit and pay less than 9% taxes) when someone should be challenging this hypocrite so that we can all listen as he talks out of both sides of his mouth to see what his ideology is on the incident of this kid, and what has he really done for your state, because it will speak volumes of what he really wants to do for the state and the communities in the state of Ohio, because he will want to have it both ways.

Remember this is the same guy that takes $174,000 of your federal tax dollars and helped filibuster with his right wing cronies in the senate with Touché Turtle McConnell over 419 times to NOT put your state back to work and with other bills that he filibustered by him and his right wing cadre of hypocrites -----nice job, keep it up, you can now be rated like what is happening in Wisconsin (rated 49th in job growth) and other right wing states with big state deficits and falling further behind when it comes to balancing your state budget by blaming the poor and unemployed, hunger for being takers .

5. Well, the Democratic Party has abandoned Ohio since 2008. The state party is inept/corrupt.

The news media in Ohio is completely owned by right wing nuts. In 2010 the Ohio State University sold its am radio station that covered most of the state and it is now St Gabriel Catholic Radio owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus. Thanks Gordon Gee. Ohioans are bathed in right wing propaganda.

We need serious help in throwing off the yoke of authoritarianism. Ohio has already hit third world status. Our urban and rural areas are being stripmined for public tax dollars to give away to the rich. They are now stripmining the suburban public schools for the benefit of the GOP donor class who own the charter schools. The suburbanites have been told they are the intelligent hard working folks and everyone else are a bunch lowlifes, while the GOP donor class is picking their pockets.

Ohioans could wake up from this nightmare, if the Democratic Party would put some effort into helping Ohioans see what is going on. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is busy helping the corporate class destroy public education throughout the US. By refusing to support public education, the Democratic Party is actively working against its own interests and suppressing the vote from a reliable Democratic voting block, public educators. If we want to see where Ohio went wrong, it was when Ted Strickland, an otherwise pretty good Democratic governor, threw the teachers under the bus in his one term. It was a big reason why he was not reelected. Taking away snow days was a really stupid idea, among his many bad education ideas. Fingerhut was, also, the worst choice for heading the Ohio Board of Regents until Petro, of course.

Your state in the last 6 election cycles has had its districts Gerrymandered to segregate the working classes into nothing except a power base designed to further the destruction in this state and others by blaming the poor and the weakened middle class for its problems, this occurs during the census and by special legislation.
To lay this issue at the feet of the Democrat party is really disingenuous on its face.
Rachel Maddow had it right in one of her segments couple of weeks ago.
There are over 36000 right wing republican controlled legislative bodies in this country, this would include the public education department, water department, Comptroller, city council you name it they have the power and are sitting on this power and what are they doing to your state and the country as a whole is frightening and all they are doing is nothing except laying blame on the poor and the unemployed, and the middle class by using fear and hate.
Presently 27 states are completely controlled by right wing republicans all they need is 11 more states to have a Constitutional Convention, think of what the Department of Education would look like if they get this Convention, EPA, Justice Department, you name it.
You have 5 sitting U.S. Supreme court justices eviscerating and making laws against what the Constitution says for them to operate under, what is really galling is that some of these right wing hypocrites go to political functions where there are corporate donors and they then pass judgment on a lawsuit being filed or having a wife on a political PAC or getting gifts.
Imagine if we had all three branches under right wing republican control of the Justice system and the nominations, we are seeing this damage now when W Bush, Reagan, Bush (read my lips) got there judges on the bench

The blame is on those that do not go to the city council meetings, school board meetings and other functions at the ground level to find out what these hypocrites are doing and challenging them on there tactics to expose them, its is not about money its about involvement.
Thom Hartmann had it right and Bernie Sanders said this this to Hartmann and he (Hartmann) has been doing saying this phrase everyday "Democracy is not a spectator sport, get involved TAG YOUR IT GET INVOLVE DEMOCRACY BEGINS WITH YOU"

wing church nuts. There are lots of us doing the hard work going to meetings, talking to politicians, campaigning for our candidates. We know that the great candidates like Nina Turner, David Pepper, Scott Wharton etc,,, got very little help from the national party. The carpetbagger weasel, Wharton ran against could be defeated. People in this district have no idea the creep Stivers is a banking lobbyist. The national party could drop some money in this district, do some advertizing, and organizing and win it back no matter how gerrymandered it is, if the people in charge, gave two hoots about the people who live here.

Blaming gerrrymandering is the biggest cop out there is. The people in the areas that make up this district use to vote for Democrats so it is a huge lie that it does no good to contest gerrymandered districts.

I live this every day watching these crooks destroy the public schools, public health and education programs and decimate public safety. We are living the death and disaster that goes with the Koch/GOP rule. This is not something funny to dismiss with a stupid smilie. I know dozens of people whose lives are being ruined thanks to Kasich. I have friends who have lost family members within the year thanks to cuts to road maintenance in our Appalachian region. That is just fine with the national Democratic Party, letting Appalachians die is no big deal to them.

Your post is classic victim blaming and sounds like it is straight from the desk of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.

They are salivating for the opportunity to finally put a the last nail in the coffin of the Roosevelt era that created the hatred middle class through unionization and safety net programs for those in need.

Good luck young Americans your future is in the hands of jackals who will devour you and throw you in the garbage dump. Only those who are of use to feed their insatiable greed for money and power will be spared.

I was truly blessed in having been able to get a good education without mountains of debt, a well paying job with security of employment and a pension thanks to the struggle of my parents and their generation to establish the middle class and a hope for a better future for their children.

What kind of future is on the horizon when see have seen over 50,000 manufacturing facilities outsourced or closed with no hope in sight of any magical turnaround. Rather what we see are more bogus trade treaties that are solely designed to further depress the economy. What hope is there for the working class when they will be competing with countries with a minimum wage of less than a dollar an hour.
