Shaheen Joins Democrats Opposed to Weiss for Treasury Post

Senator Jeanne Shaheen will oppose Antonio Weiss to be undersecretary of the U.S. Treasury, joining other Democrats lining up against the nomination of the Wall Street banker.

Shaheen, of New Hampshire, said she is concerned about Weiss’s work on tax inversions, in which a U.S.-based company moves its legal headquarters to a lower-tax country.

“I’m troubled by Mr. Weiss’s work on corporate inversions that place a tax burden on small businesses and middle class families, and his lack of domestic regulatory experience and, as a result, I’m not convinced that he is the right person for the job,” Shaheen said in an e-mailed statement.

Her spokesman, Shripal Shah, said Shaheen will oppose Weiss’s confirmation. The White House and Treasury Department had no immediate response.
