Texas Christian school fires unwed pregnant teacher
Source: Raw Story
A Christian school in Texas has fired an unmarried science teacher because it claimed she was not a good Christian role model even after she offered to get married.
Cathy Samford, who is now 39 weeks pregnant, told ABC News that she was totally shocked when Heritage Christian Academy in Rockwall, Texas fired her from her job as a science teacher and volleyball coach after they discovered she was pregnant late last year.
Im not just some teacher that went out to a bar and got pregnant and went back to school saying its okay, Samford explained. I was in a committed relationship the whole time and probably would have been married if things had gone differently and this would be a non-situation.
I didnt think I would lose my job, she said. I was in shock and devastated and thats when I said, If this is the problem, Im willing, and so is my fiancé, to go ahead and get married. That wasnt the issue. We were going to get married regardless.

Where is the support for the "right to life" in this instance from the so called "right to life" community?
...Another example of Christian leadership not following their own tenets.

(640 posts)If she'd gotten an abortion, the school would have been none the wiser and she'd still have a job.
I wonder if the school realizes that they are, in a sense, promoting abortion through their employment practices.

(15,669 posts)What a hypocrite. If people want to live a fundamentally Christian life that has to justify pregnancy in this way, then they should expect to pay the consequences. It's just another case of being all for a strict code of morality except when it comes to oneself.

Time for religious institutions to pay taxes or be completely barred from receiving ANY public money.

(5,668 posts)don't forget Michael English got panned for having a kid out of wedlock. was barred from doing so called Christian music. course real Christian music, usually involves the singer making little money
so whether one intends to get married or not, the out of wedlock thing is what did it. She would have known this. Don't work for a Christian school, unless you do things by the book. That being said. I disagree with this one. As the out of wedlock thing is out of date.
Mistakes happen. Explain this to Bristol Palin... and she's not trying to get married. But I'm guessing many folks at that school just adore Bristol anyway.

(20,588 posts)The anti-abortion crowd has turned unmarried women who choose to give birth into martyrs for their cause. Unfortunately, the women do not realize that it is these same people who will condemn them for getting pregnant in the first place. Cut healthcare for the mother and babies, fire the "witches," cut food programs for the babies etc.
Disgusting.

(15,774 posts)it is still in most teacher's contracts in Texas, even public schools. A holdover from the days when teacher's were either unmarried or spinsters.
Edited to add...and yes, you can get fired for moral turpitude, even in a public school, let alone a fundi school.

(35,359 posts)Teachers get fired for a lot of reasons. Many of them involving perfectly legal behavior.
Get drunk and post the pictures on Facebook so your kids can see them.
Sexist comments might get you in hot water. Racist--or even things that might appear racist--will get you canned.
Heck, I suspect that if a teacher started some sort of notorious personal ministry site, pushing some religion in a way that might be deemed to be targeting students, he'd lose his contract.
"Moral turpitude" is very much in the eye of the principal and school board.

(12,287 posts)wouldn't end up the same way, with just abstinence as sex education. It's usually the Christian school's girls around here that turn up as teen-age mothers.
On edit: I wonder how many of those that decided to fire her applauded Palin's kid's decision to keep her baby?
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)to think being an unwed mother would in any way be less than openly welcome by the Christian school. It's not exactly breaking news that they would oppose illegitimate children. And the nonsense about being in a committed relationship and probably would have been married simply shows her own level of hypocrisy. I would love to hear exactly why she and her fiance couldn't manage to get married before she got pregnant.
While I personally have no problem with people living together, and although I also think it's really a much better idea to get married before having a baby, in this case she should have had some better sense of what teaching at a Christian school is all about.

(228 posts)... that's just the "real Christians" argument. Since belief is all subjective (read: all in your head), there is no such thing as a "real Christian." It's just whoever calls themselves that, is that. That's why all the centuries of various inter-Christian wars, and why the 1st Amendment.
