Cory Booker, Newark Mayor, Taken To Hospital Following Attempted Fire Rescue

Source: Huffington Post

Newark Mayor Cory Booker was taken to the hospital Thursday evening after attempting to rescue the inhabitants of a burning house near his own New Jersey home, a spokeswoman said.

According to NJ.com: The fire occurred at a two-story building on Hawthorne Avenue in the Upper Clinton Hill neighborhood, shortly before the mayor had arrived home following a television interview on News 12 New Jersey.

Booker, who was taken by emergency medical workers to University Hospital in Newark, later told The Star-Ledger he suffered second-degree burns on his hand.

... Booker arrived, dashing upstairs with other members of his security detail and yelling for the woman in the building.

“I’m back here, I’m back here,” she yelled from a back bedroom, Ziyad was told by the mayor. After his security detail held him back, he told Ziyad, the mayor then yelled out to his guards to release him. “She is going to die, she’s going to die,” he said, and crossed the smoke and flames before grabbing the woman.

Along with the security detail, Booker carried the woman in his arms through the spreading fire and smoke out of the building, Ziyad said.

He's everywhere, he's full of energy, he'll answer your twitter questions, he'll get the snow plowed from your street if the city missed it. And now, he'll get away from his guards so he can save you from a fire.

President Booker....I think I like the way that looks in print. Nice job, Mr. Booker, nice job.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that's in his future. He's a real star-on-the-horizon. He's got the brains and the conscience and the goods. And we need the bench strength.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]Kept waiting for him to stumble and reveal feet of clay. But over time I've come to believe he's the real deal.

Would love to see him as NJ Governor and after that... who knows? One mission at a time, though.

Anyone who rushes into a fire to save another human being is a hero. Period.

I'm sure Christy is seething in venomous jealousy and beginning to fear for his job come election time.

he's among the biggest supporters of privatized education through charter schools.

I'd rather leave the dramatic rescues to firefighters -- and the teaching to schoolteachers.
