Five Largest Movie Theater Companies Drop 'The Interview'
Source: Huffington Post
The five largest movie theater companies have dropped "The Interview" after threats from the Sony hack. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Regal Entertainment, AMC Entertainment, Cinemark and Cineplex Entertainment have joined Carmike Cinemas in pulling the film from release. Landmark Sunshine Cinemas also canceled its New York premiere of the film, and another Northeast chain with 55 locations, Bow Tie Cinemas, decided to abandon plans to show the film following the threats. "The safety and comfort of our patrons is foremost in our minds," Bow Tie CEO Ben Moss told Variety. Arclight Cinemas will also not show "The Interview."
Carmike Cinemas, was first to drop "The Interview," which is scheduled for release on Christmas Day. The decisions to pull "The Interview" come after a cyber hack against Sony Pictures threatened the theaters that showed the film. "We will clearly show it to you at the very time and places 'The Interview' be shown, including the premiere, how bitter fate those who seek fun in terror should be doomed to," a note published Tuesday read. When the threats surfaced, officials from the Department of Homeland Security told the Huffington Post that even though they were aware of the note, "there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the United States."
Combined, these companies make up approximately 1,646 movie theaters in North America.
"Due to wavering support of the film 'The Interview' by Sony Pictures, as well as the ambiguous nature of any real or perceived security threats, Regal Entertainment Group has decided to delay the opening of the film in our theaters," a representative for Regal said in a statement to Huffington Post.

Especially when the comedy in question is based on a CIA attempt to assassinate a foreign leader.

ALL censorship is bad, always. Anything that impedes any information flowing anywhere is something I'll fight with any and all means.

(67,782 posts)....my first thought was that this could be troublesome for the producers. That wacko in charge of North Korea has lots of resources and ZERO conscience.

(13,297 posts)get the North Korean government to show their cards on what they could do to debilitate major computer networks, etc, and voila - it worked! Yay.
Of course their first attempt was "Team America - World Police" but it didn't work, so they moved on to something more akin to really poking Kim with a stick in the Sony release.
The plot for this movie-within-a-movie is getting complicated... the author is going to have to use index cards now to write it.

Is this a ploy to charge more for movie tickets and have to go thru security checks ?
Its hard not being cynical about all this .

(1,333 posts)was responsible for Sony hack? If they could easily hack sony, are we to believe they will only stop at Sony? I really have no idea what is going on but I find this whole episode really weird. I think the movie will find its way to the box office and will make a pant load of money because of this controversy. The actors and actresses will emerge from this as big big time movie stars.
This will end well for everyone involved except NK

(1 post)I don't know what to think? This seems fishy....Publicity at its best maybe. Hard to believe this was pulled. What will Sony do when it announces it will be released on video ask North Korea if that's OK?
