New Hampshire Suspects Found Dead After Killing Police Chief in Shootout

A man and a woman were found dead today in the New Hampshire house where a shootout left a police chief killed and four other officers injured,

The couple inside the house are believed to have been the result of either a suicide pact or a murder-suicide.

The police shooting occurred Thursday in Greenland, a coastal town of 3,500 outside Portsmouth, N.H., after a standoff with a suspect believed to be armed with a rifle.

The officer shot dead was Chief Michael Malone. Two officers are listed as critical, according to emergency services, while two others have been released from the hospital.

The incident may have been the result of a drug bust gone bad, according to reports.

2. This is the second time this year multiple cops have been shot in a drug raid.

In Ogden, Utah, in January, Officer Jared Francom was shot and killed and four or five other officers wounded.

The Ogden raid was over a personal marijuana grow. This one appears to have been over steroids.

Maybe the police need to rethink how they go about this. This gung-ho, paramilitarized policing doesn't only kill citizens, it also kills cops. Whatever happened to "The place is surrounded. Come out with your hands up"?

3. See, I think people will take away the opposite lesson.

You don't go in with 4 cops. You bring the swat team dressed for war.

4. They're already using SWAT tens of thousands of times a year.

SWAT was supposed to be for barricaded suspects, hostage situations, and other exceptional circumstances.

But now, it's routinely used for drug raids. And those "no knock," bust-the-door-down-in-the-middle-of-the-night raids are increasingly common, too.

The Ogden raid was one of those paramilitarized, no-knock raids. I'm not clear on this incident yet.

These aggressive raids result in too many people killed, and nine out of 10 of them are not cops, but civilians.

They also result in gun-owning homeowners being killed after they meet night-time intruders gun in hand. Where the drug war and our love of guns intersect is very scary and dangerous territory.

And the argument is going to be that this had the outcome it did because they "didn't take all of the precautions" meaning they didn't show up with the Marines.

5. We also had a similar high-profile drug raid here a couple of years back

Cops bust down the door at like 5:30 in the morning and the guy thinks it's an invasion and opens fire the moment the door opens and kills a couple and wounds a couple more...The guy was a piece of shit and got a long sentence, but some ugly facts about the cops and how they handled the investigation came out:

1. The detectives' primary source of info was an informant who was a former friend/drug dealing partner of the shooter with an axe to grind...

2. The cops came with a small army armed to the teeth to serve the warrant

3. The detectives on at least one occasion strongly "encouraged" (without directly ordering) the informant to break into the shooter's home to snoop around while he and his family were out

4. The cops went in expecting to find Pablo Escobar living in a house made of bricks of coke and hundred-dollar bills, but when all was said and done all they found was some reefer, and not a whole lot of it, either...

7. Generally, in a drug raid, they need evidence more than suspects.

It looks like the chief and the local boys were trying to not do the full-on SWAT raid - I beleive they may have known the suspect(s), and were trying to have things go quietly, thus the lack of body armor.
