(Jerry Brown, Calif.) Governor tells lawmakers to 'man up'

Republicans may have hoped Gov. Jerry Brown's Friday comments that lawmakers should "man up" and make budget cuts sooner than later would spark an intra-party war over gender sensitivity, but Democratic leaders took the fiery rhetoric in stride, saying it's just part of the eclectic politician's charm.

The response was a far cry from the vitriolic reaction from the left eight years ago, when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger mocked lawmakers as "girlie-men" and vowed to "terminate" them at the polls if they did not approve his spending plan.

Brown certainly didn't mince words on KGO radio's Ronn Owens show Friday morning, speaking on a wide range of hot-button issues including immigration, welfare, high speed rail and gambling. But it was his comment that the Legislature "has to man up, make the cuts" that got the most attention.

The governor has been pushing since January for lawmakers to begin approving his budget cuts - largely to state health and welfare programs - but the Democratically-controlled Legislature has thus far demurred. The legislators say they want to wait until next month, when Brown's administration will release a revised proposal based on tax returns over the past several months.

And I've personally used it in conversations with my grandson.

I think the use of it by Gov. Brown is entirely appropriate given the circumstances.
