Obama warns GOP he plans to use veto pen in 2015

Source: Chicago Sun Times

HONOLULU — Warning from President Barack Obama to congressional Republicans: I have a veto pen and, come January, I won’t be afraid to use it.

Since taking office in 2009, Obama has only vetoed legislation twice, both in fairly minor circumstances. But with Republicans set to take full control of Congress next year, Obama is losing his last bulwark against a barrage of bills he doesn’t like: the Senate.

“I haven’t used the veto pen very often since I’ve been in office,” Obama said in an NPR interview airing Monday. “Now, I suspect, there are going to be some times where I’ve got to pull that pen out.”

He added: “I’m going to defend gains that we’ve made in health care. I’m going to defend gains that we’ve made on environment and clean air and clean water.”

So far today, upon reading said topic, or facebook quote, I seem to be coming up with the same thoughts as others.

Feeling pretty pointless, it all does.

I hope he does--I've been regularly disappointed upon occasions that required backbone, either from the president, or the Democrats in Congress, like this bill they recently passed.

His words are all 'look at what I have in my right hand', while his actions are all 'don't look at what I did with my left hand'.

Bogus rhetoric to con people while he implements a right of center agenda

Vetoing the gutting of Dodd-Frank that lets the Big Banks use FDIC insurance money as collateral for unbelievably-risky bets is only the first in a long line of vetoes that will protect Americans from predation.

I will remain skeptical.

ETA: I see that the two vetoes that he has made were in 2009 and 2010, when the Dems held congressional majorities. None since the cons took over

And I'm not sure either one of those is 100% off the table.

And six years of Obama refraining from using all his powers is good reason to be skeptical about what he is saying now.

On the other hand, there have been a couple of recent uses of his executive power, for example Cuba and immigration, that seem like a change to me. But that's just my judgement, other people can have differing honest judgments.
