Measles outbreak at Disneyland linked to non-vaccinations
Source: CBS News
Health officials fear thousands may have been exposed to the measles at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure last month. Most of those who got the disease were not vaccinated against it.
With tens of thousands of visitors from around the world -- in close contact -- every day, the "Happiest Place on Earth" was an ideal place for the highly contagious disease to spread, according to epidemiologist, Dr. Mark Zahn.....
Measles infections in the U.S. skyrocketed last year, with 610 cases reported. That's the highest number since 2000, when the disease that causes a rash, high fever and red, watery eyes was considered to have been eliminated. The CDC says the increase is tied to a decline in child vaccinations.....
The CDC says the risk of a serious allergic reaction to vaccines is less than one in a million. Still, when CBS News spoke to Dr. Sears last summer, he said half of his patients choose not to vaccinate.

I hope this story gets a lot of attention, those who chose to listen to anti-vaxers need to be hearing this.

(11,519 posts)Except for the current trend for parents to opt-out of having their kids vaccinated (which is now allowed in 48 out of 50 states).
ALSO, I just happened to stumble across this facebook page for a group in Mississippi that's pushing for the right to opt out of vaccinations for school children. https://www.facebook.com/MSParentsForVaccineRights

(2,642 posts)This is why 100% vaccination is critical.
Even those who are vaccinated are not always safe - it doesn't always "take."
So those who choose not to vaccinate for stupidass reasons are risking the lives not only of their children, but all of the children who can't be vaccinated or don't gain the immunity.

(2,741 posts)does not allow one child (and parents) to infect others with a harmful disease that could be controlled by a simple vaccination. Yet, that is the defence many anti-vaccers give.

(26,549 posts)Vaccines just don't "take" in a small number of people who receive them. Something around 1-5% (actual number varies by vaccine). There's an immune response to the vaccine, but the "memory cells" for that vaccine don't form. It's those cells that make vaccines cause "immunity".
Being vaccinated does not mean that you can't catch measles, it means that your immune system responds extremely fast due to those "memory cells" and you wipe out the virus before you can have symptoms or pass on the disease.
That's part of why herd immunity is so critical. It not only protects those who can't be vaccinated, it protects those where the vaccine is not effective.

(14,337 posts)I worked in public schools from 2007 to 2011. Many parents told me they used that exemption for philosphical reasons, including the unvaccinated 5 year old I worked with 1:1. I was told that many potential employees refused to work with unvaccinated children. Sad. Unvaccinated ME did not care. The school district never even asked me if I was vaccinated myself. Probaby because I was born before 1957 and had all those childhood diseases myself? They never asked about boosters I might have needed over 50+ years for the few vax I had as a child.
Anyway, this is State of Florida policy. I am sure there are a lot of unvaccinated Florida children (resident discounts) walking around Disney World too, including their unvaccinated or not up to date on boosers parents and grandparents. ONLY children? Will achieving 100% childhood immunity create Herd Immunity? All adults are fully vaccinated and recevied all boosters? I know all of the parents said they themselves were not fully vaccinated or had boosters. Only unvaccinated children spread disease? Adults can't?
Papers, Citizen? I never thought this was a Liberal vs. Conservative issue, but trolling that other site and speaking with parents themselves, it seems to be Liberals more so who want to take away individual rights all in the name of greater good. For who? Big Parms? Big Health Care? I will depart company with you on this one as an adult and a Senior.
