ALBUQUERQUE: Charges to be filed Monday against APD officers in Boyd shooting

Source: KRQE News 13

(KRQE) – District Attorney Kari Brandenburg plans to file murder charges on Monday against the two Albuquerque police officers who shot James Boyd in the Sandia Foothills last March, according to multiple sources with firsthand knowledge of her decision.

It will mark the first time an APD officer has faced criminal charges for shooting someone in the line of duty in New Mexico’s largest city. APD has one of the highest rates of police shootings in the country, and Boyd’s death was the result of the most controversial in a series of 27 fatal shootings here since 2010.

Boyd, 36, had been camping in a restricted area of open space at Albuquerque’s eastern edge. During a four-hour standoff with police who had responded to a call about Boyd from an area resident, he brandished two small knives multiple times.

One officer’s helmet-mounted camera captured the final moments of the encounter, when Boyd appeared to be complying with commands to leave the area. As he bent down to gather his belongings, an officer threw a flash-bang grenade at his feet. Another officer sicced a police dog on Boyd, who pulled the knives out of his pockets again. As he was turning away from the officers, two of them fired three rounds apiece from assault-style rifles, striking Boyd in the back.

It's about time something was done about this murder. I watched the video last spring shortly after it happened. And it was as wrong as the more recent killings.

But that's only the tip of the iceberg. The entire criminal justice system has been taken over by private, profit-driven interests that act as forces against the best interests of the public. Sadly, with some local exceptions, even the public employee unions are conscripted into the profit game. The guards unions lobby for draconian drug laws, the cops cover for each other, probation & parole officers are evaluated based on their rate of collections of supervision fees from their criminal probationers & parolees, court proceedings are set up to extract money from the lower classes with petty fines & judgments, the police have free rein to confiscate private property for no good reason…

Two Albuquerque police officers have been charged with murder in the
March killing of a homeless camper, a shooting that generated sometimes
violent protests around the city and sparked a federal investigation, prosecutors said Monday.

SWAT team member Dominique Perez and former Detective Keith Sandy will
each face a single count of open murder in the death of 38-year-old James Boyd,
Second District Attorney Kari Brandenburg said. Open murder allows prosecutors
to pursue either first-degree or second-degree murder charges.

The Boyd shooting, and more than three dozen other police shootings
since 2010,
sparked a series of protests, including one that
forced authorities to fire tear gas
canisters at violent demonstrators
and another that shut down a City Council meeting.

So glad to hear this. That guy was no threat to them. They killed him for daring to disobey them.
