Excerpts from Joni Ernst's big speech tonight

"Congress is back to work on your behalf," the Iowa Republican will say

During her live, nationally-televised speech tonight, Iowa U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst will call for tearing down trade barriers, making tax filing easier, defeating terrorism and other ideas to change the direction of the country................

"I'd like to have a conversation about the new Republican Congress you just elected, and how we plan to make Washington focus on your concerns again," Ernst will say, according to excerpts from her prepared remarks. "We heard the message you sent in November, loud and clear. And now we're getting to work to change the direction Washington has been taking our country."

Here are some other pieces of her speech that her staff released tonight ahead of the speech:

"We see our neighbors agonize over stagnant wages and lost jobs. We see the hurt caused by canceled health care plans and higher monthly insurance bills. We see too many moms and dads put their own dreams on hold while growing more fearful about the kind of future they'll be able to leave to their children. Americans have been hurting, but when we demanded solutions, too often Washington responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies like Obamacare. It's a mindset that gave us political talking points, not serious solutions."

---

"There's a lot we can achieve if we work together. Let's tear down trade barriers in places like Europe and the Pacific. Let's sell more of what we make and grow in America over there so we can boost manufacturing, wages, and jobs right here, at home. Let's simplify America's outdated and loophole-ridden tax code. Republicans think tax filing should be easier for you, not just the well-connected. So let's iron out loopholes to lower rates — and create jobs, not pay for more government spending. The President has already expressed some support for these kinds of ideas. We're calling on him now to cooperate to pass them."...............

It's all the usual material -- nasty labels slapped on one's opponents, vague proposals, a few feeble claims of solidarity and empathy. We've seen this show before.

The "charitable deduction," "medical expense deduction," "job-related expense deduction" and "home mortgage interest deduction" loopholes are highly popular with the middle class, and also expensive. The alcohol fuel credit loophole is very popular in Iowa - the state Nutcutter claims to represent.

At this juncture in our nation's history, 60 percent of all tax returns can be done on either Form 1040EZ or 1040A. Most people don't have exotic tax returns - they're not in business for themselves and they don't itemize. If you don't itemize, "loopholes" don't come into play.

Today is January 20. Eighty-five days from now the Republicans are going to get a bound copy of the Internal Revenue Code, pile it on an empty skid (yes, it is a massive thing) and complain about how complex the Code is. And then you start reading into it...you'll find such entertaining passages as 26 USC 5881:

5881: Greenmail
(a) Imposition of tax
There is hereby imposed on any person who receives greenmail a tax equal to 50 percent of gain or other income of such person by reason of such receipt.
(b) Greenmail
For purposes of this section, the term “greenmail” means any consideration transferred by a corporation (or any person acting in concert with such corporation) to directly or indirectly acquire stock of such corporation from any shareholder if—
(1) such shareholder held such stock (as determined under section 1223) for less than 2 years before entering into the agreement to make the transfer,
(2) at some time during the 2-year period ending on the date of such acquisition—
(A) such shareholder,
(B) any person acting in concert with such shareholder, or
(C) any person who is related to such shareholder or person described in subparagraph (B),
made or threatened to make a public tender offer for stock of such corporation, and
(3) such acquisition is pursuant to an offer which was not made on the same terms to all shareholders.
For purposes of the preceding sentence, payments made in connection with, or in transactions related to, an acquisition shall be treated as paid in such acquisition.
(c) Other definitions
For purposes of this section—
(1) Public tender offer
The term “public tender offer” means any offer to purchase or otherwise acquire stock or assets in a corporation if such offer was or would be required to be filed or registered with any Federal or State agency regulating securities.
(2) Related person
A person is related to another person if the relationship between such persons would result in the disallowance of losses under section 267 or 707 (b).
(d) Tax applies whether or not amount recognized
The tax imposed by this section shall apply whether or not the gain or other income referred to in subsection (a) is recognized.
(e) Administrative provisions
For purposes of the deficiency procedures of subtitle F, any tax imposed by this section shall be treated as a tax imposed by subtitle A.

I don't know about y'all, but greenmail is not a significant hazard in my life. I couldn't greenmail if I WANTED to!

There are two classes of people for whom the Income Tax is too complex: those who believe everything they're told, and those who have very complex lives. For most of us, filing taxes comes down to "write down how much you made last year, then subtract these specific things, then look up the remainder in this table to see how much you owe. Finally, subtract that from what you already paid to see if you owe us money or we owe you."

Some people would pay $30 for him to do their 1040EZ. Some are just so stupid no level of tax reform would help them. But I agree for most of us our lives are simple enough that tax loopholes and such don't apply and completing a 1040 is not any more difficult then eight-grade math.

Let me guess...the teabag solution to these and every other problem you can think of is...

Wait for it....

Tax cuts for the rich, cut food assistance, kill medicare, SSI, social security and make sure only the 1% have any access to healthcare, outlaw gay marriage and gays in general?

Oh I forgot, set up a fake Christian theocracy, guns, guns, guns, and even more guns, outlaw any other religion except the fake official one, etc.

But the main one is NO TAXES FOR THE RICH! Because...Kansas?

as much crap as the GOP gives Obama about teleprompters, they probably shouldn't have picked someone who looked like they were reading off of a teleprompter... or made her memorize her speech since she 'wasn't going to address Obama's SOTU' anyway....
