Karzai wants 'at least $2 billion' a year from US
Source: AFP News
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday said he wanted "at least $2 billion" a year from the United States after it withdraws its troops in 2014.
Karzai said the US should specify in a partnership agreement to be signed between his country and the US how much money it will give to Afghanistan after they leave.
"They (US) say we will give you money, but will not specify the amount. We say give us less, but write it down," Karzai told a group of university professors and students in Kabul.
"We want them to write down that America will give for Afghanistan's security $2 billion a year -- or at least two billion a year", he said. "If they want to give us more, they are welcome."

I'm leaning toward how about you'll get some humanitarian aid that's strictly monitored and accounted for to the penny.

Um ... if they (the U.S.) doesn't specify the amount, then why would you want less than that?

(4,524 posts)Screw Afghanistan. Time to come home as soon as we can, and by home, I mean a complete abandonment and self-razing of all of our bases in the Middle East.

The Afghans have been playing this aid/protection racket on both sides beautifully from the start...

(347 posts)Money rears it's ugly head. Well no surprise, that's what most of this 'war on terror' has been about. Blackwater agents getting on helicopters with duffel bags full of money and they were not the only ones. Billions unaccounted for in all the 'aid' sent to Iraq. Give me a break!

(9,748 posts)I remember getting spam'ed by various groups back in the '90s decrying the United States abandoning Afghanistan after the Soviets left. They specifically called for more funding for humanitarian aid and to supply arms to the elected Afghan gov't security as the Taliban was well on the way to conquering Afghanistan and imposing a theocracy based on religious laws unknown by the people of Kabul.

(1,560 posts)How many billions have we spent over the years in bribing tinpot dictators? This is insane. As long as there is even 1 American hungry or in poverty no foreign country should be receiving anything from us unless its an extreme humanitarian catastrophe.

God forbid the war-drum beaters should pay a higher percentage. They didn't inherit that money to be spent on what they demand.

(57,936 posts)Why should we pay any of these countries? We can't take care of our own people. Why should we take care of people in Iraq and Afghanistan?
When our people need money we are told we are broke.
Wonder where Karzai got the idea that he should get our money without our presence?
