US shouldn’t play favorites with Israel
In his farewell address to the nation, President George Washington wrote the following:
The nation which indulges toward another an habitual hatred or an habitual fondness is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to its affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its duty and its interest.
That quote is just a small taste of Washingtons warnings against favoring foreign nations with special privileges. Fast-forward a couple hundred years and some change. In a speech to the Christians United for Israel conference last month, Sen. Lindsay Graham said, Heres a word of advice to America: Dont ever turn your back on Israel, cause God will turn his back on us.
What we have here are two visions on how the American government should conduct its foreign policy. The one offered by Washington was rational and put the interests of the United States above all others while stressing impartiality. The one offered by Graham is irrational and elevates the interests of a foreign nation above those of the United States, with the threat of eternal damnation thrown in.
