Human Rights Watch Daily Brief, 26 August
Islamic State gathers strength, and arms; Gaza conflict; Libya airstrikes; Russian arms convoys in Ukraine; Nigerian soldiers flee Boko Haram attack; pollsters detained in Macau; Afghan "death list"; religious violence in Indonesia; and attacks on rights defenders in Sri Lanka.
Islamic State has taken control of the Tabqa airbase in Syria, strengthening its control of the Raqqa region and giving it access to even more weapons. UN rights chief Navi Pillay yesterday condemned the extremist militant group for its campaign of brutality in Iraq, labeling their abuses war crimes and crimes against humanity and highlighting a mass execution of hundreds of Shia prisoners in a Mosul jail. Rights groups have documented massacres by Islamic State, as well as abducting and expelling minorities en masse, including the recent, tragic assault on the Yezidi community.
