Labor Secretary: Shift Away From Subminimum Wage An ‘Example’
By Shaun Heasley
October 21, 2014
U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez is hoping that states will follow the federal governments lead in moving away from paying people with disabilities less than minimum wage.
Earlier this year, President Barack Obama signed an executive order requiring all federal contract workers including those with disabilities to be paid at least $10.10 per hour.
The change, which applies to government contracts starting in January, means that federal contractors will no longer be eligible to pay people with disabilities less than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
Traditionally, some government contractors and other employers have been able to obtain special permission from the Department of Labor to pay whats known as subminimum wage through a provision known as Section 14(c).

(20,176 posts)Democrats believe in human dignity. If we're going to argue for dignity, it starts with a fair day's pay for a fair day's work for everybody. No exceptions. No Sec. 14(c)
Pay them a dignified wage like the valuable contributors they are.

(811 posts)they asked for too little. they should have asked for 20.20/Hour. the let themselves be talked down to 15.15/hr. But their would have been more pearl clutching, and co-ordinated propaganda, (By who else.) about the ungrateful people at the bottom. this system needs a reboot. the GOP is going to have a "let them eat cake"
moment and the SWHTF!
