"In the defeat of the Democrat Mark Udall in the Colorado Senate race, his party may actually have cause for hope. Cory Gardner, the Republican congressman who beat Udall, spent much of the campaign ingeniously downplaying his previous stances on abortion and immigration reform—a backhanded compliment, one might say, to the power of women and Latino voters and their tendency to favor Democrats. Gardner had showed himself to be particularly skilled at dancing away from his positions on reproductive rights and immigration reform, and at recognizing early on that he had to do so. Not all Republicans in purple states like Colorado will be as game."
