Romney built expensive homes after 2012 loss (with pics)

LA JOLLA, Calif. On a recent weekday, a half-dozen construction workers crowded onto a small plot of land in this pricey community, banging away on an 11,000-square-foot house with expansive oceanfront views that will soon replace one a fraction of the size.
Theres a large master suite, a room for all the beach gear and a car elevator. Outside, scrawled in graffiti on a wall separating the property from the beach, was a message touting Mitt Romney for president.
Two years ago, Mitt Romney didnt think he would run for political office again. And in the aftermath of his bitter defeat in the presidential campaign, he embarked on something of a real estate spree. He simultaneously began building two multimillion-dollar homes, one here on the Pacific Ocean and another outside Salt Lake City. He also bought a third, a slopeside ski chalet in Park City, Utah.
For the first time in more than a decade, unencumbered by political considerations, the two-time presidential candidate and former private equity executive was free to spend his many millions without concern of how it might look. But now that hes considering a third presidential bid, the monuments of his wealth could become a political inconvenience, particularly as one of his key themes has been Americas growing income divide.

Thanks to the good folks at the Boston Globe for documenting all this before it's unloaded and Mittens tries to claim he lives just like you and me.

(2,574 posts)In Ca the beach is the Commons; it is public land...yet Romney's army of lawyers finessed away this Commons for his McMansion & specifically its car elevator stretching out under the sand. The notion of The Commons is utterly lost to the Romney mentality.
He's not only pillaging public property. He's also aggressively plundering his own .0001% neighbors and the City tax roles. In that tightly packed neighborhood, ocean views are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars per home. Romney will end/block many neighbors' views...depleting those property values.
That will ultimately lower neighboring property tax revenue to the City. You can bet he's using the "one wall/door standing" statute to keep his property taxes at purchase date rates. ( He even had his lawyers finagle a decreased property tax rate based on the claim that he overpaid for this unique property!)
Romney lawyers are also fighting for his sea wall, which weakens the surrounding cliffs and endangers the beach below for everybody. That's why sea walls in Ca have been largely outlawed.
Except for Romneys' Mormon billionaire pal next door, I think most people in his very wealthy neighborhood and community are sickened by the Romneys. That beach especially, which Romney has grabbed and will destabilize substantially for his car elevator, has almost mythological meaning & is deeply beloved and frequented by all the public.
I doubt Romney has ever even read The Pump House Gang.
