How "clean" was sold to America with fake science

http://gizmodo.com/how-clean-was-sold-to-america-1685320177?google_editors_picks=true

"The average American's daily hygiene ritual would seem unusual—nay, obsessive—to our forebears a hundred years ago. From mouthwash to deodorant, most of our hygiene products were invented in the past century. To sell them, the advertising industry had to create pseudoscientific maladies like "bad breath" and "body odor.""

2. I don't think "bad breath" and "body odor" were made up.

I've worked with people who have breath so bad I had to stay a few feet away to talk. I also worked with people who left an odor trail so foul, I can understand how dogs follow scents.

I'm amazed at the number of supposedly modern people who smell pretty terrible.

If you and everyone else smelled like that you would not notice the smell, and if for some reason you did you would think nothing of it. And there was a day when such was the case.

Our sense of smell does get used to certain odors. So let's go back to once a year baths.

You're the only person who has ever agreed with me about this exact topic. I am an old lady who has never really worn makeup, maybe sometimes some eyeliner pencil to make my eyes look open. I just could never stand the thought of putting dirt on my face. This drove my mom crazy, my sister crazy, and all of my friends crazy. Still does.

I honestly don't know why they care.

Yeah, funny that human race was able to get along without them for MILLENIA before that. And many, particularly if
they don't live in First World nations, still get along without them.
