In Freddie Gray's Neighborhood, Residents Say Police Harassment is Constant

Lifelong residents say they can't even stand outside on a summer day - April 24, 2015

Transcript

STEPHEN JANIS, INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER, TRNN: It's a growing memorial, constructed from the remnants of a man's life and death. A man who has come to symbolize one neighborhood's pain and a city's frustration. Residents of Gilmor Homes, trying to make something meaningful out of the brief life of Freddie Gray and his death while in police custody.

This is where Gray was initially detained, and where he started what would be a slow and painful procession towards death in the back of a police paddy wagon. And while police continue to stonewall on the details relating to just exactly how Gray's neck was severed from his spine, his community has begun the process of bearing witness to the crosscurrents of heavy-handed policing and neglect from City Hall they believe are at the root of his death that has rocked not just the community, but transfixed the nation.

GILMOR HOMES RESIDENT: And it's not okay for you to beat our young men like they, they slaves. You slaughtering them. That's not okay to do that.

JANIS: Gray died a week after he was arrested. Police say they have no evidence of use of force. Six officers have been suspended, and the Justice Department has joined the investigation. But witnesses from his community say police are not telling the truth.

WITNESS: The paddy wagon was right there. They took the young man out, beat him some more.

2. I used to think that, too. Made me feel better. But one has to pause and watch. None of the other

random officers that come on the scene are objecting...even when they know they are being watched...they feel they are immune. They saunter around...the good ones would have to be whistle blowers at this point, and they would be summarily fired. Most get a paid vacation. So I'm not thinking there are many "good ones" around any more. Same with the Chiefs. They set the tone and the On the Job Training. They are not upset...just that they got caught on camera and have to come up with PC (Police Correct) words.

especially after all the new cell phone revelations...and it's mostly on the backs of the Blacks...or shot in the back...outrageous...it's just business at usual. But not any more. We're getting on to them...cell phone brigade. Liberal/Progressives are coming back and we don't suffer being fooled by these thugs.

3. Probably not just bad cops, corrupt and enduring hierarchies seem likely.

Residents should organize some stand outside your home days. No, make that months. Make sure there are lots of cameras and microphones for documentation.

Seeing all these bad cops stories over the years makes me wonder about the ability of local corruption to completely ruin citizens rights to pursue happiness.

I think this goes on in lots of places. Old boys and corruption across gov. and police. Lots of cover ups and little protection for citizens.
