... “I was teaching in South Carolina at that time,” said one member of the audience. “In many cases, the children of the whites were actually being wet-nursed by blacks in the community. It never seemed to occur to them (the whites) that there was anything odd by the situation. It was as though people were just not aware.”
For several in the audience the real issue wasn’t race, but poverty. “The Great Society programs started by Johnson never received the support they deserved,” said one member.
David Moon-Wainwright, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church (the Green Church) where the film was shown, asked how the subject of the film represented the same challenges faced by individuals in Calistoga today. “In Calistoga, the discrimination isn’t toward blacks, but toward Hispanics.”
“As long as the poor whites are encouraged to see themselves as ‘superior’ to people of color, the institution of racism will continue to flourish,” responded one member of the audience. “And we’re seeing this same dynamic today. The Confederate flag controversy is a part of that” ...
