Driverless trucks, trains and pilotless planes
There's a commonly told joke among pilots about the "cockpit of the future".
The flight deck will contain one human and one dog. The pilot will be there to scan the instruments, and the dog will bite his hand if he touches anything.
The flying public might find that a bit far-fetched. But the reality of 21st-century commercial aviation is that pilots spend the vast majority of their time in flight overseeing complex computer systems rather than actually flying the plane by hand.
On a commercial flight these days, whether an hour-long hop between Sydney and Melbourne or a 14-hour flight across the Pacific, it is possible a pilot will spend as little as one minute touching the control stick.
