Remembering and honoring the Buffalo Soldiers

... As we observe the 100th anniversary of World War I, there is another Army unit of black soldiers that we should remember: the 92nd infantry division. This division was established in 1917 and was composed of black soldiers from all over the U.S. They took as their unit name the Buffalo Soldiers in honor of the 9th and 10th cavalry regiments. The division was sent to France in 1918, where it fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive of Sept. 26 to Nov. 11, 1918. This offensive was one of the largest operations in the history of the U.S. Army — by the time it was over the Americans had suffered more than 120,000 killed and wounded. The 92nd division served with honor and took a lot of casualties ...

... willingness to accept equality did not come overnight, and it did not come out of nowhere.

And, one of the big reasons it finally did come was because of the brave service of so many black soldiers in the U.S. military ...
