Doctors divided on meningitis B vaccine
They see benefits, but also worry about short safety and effectiveness track record

By Paul Sisson | 10:42 a.m. Nov. 25, 2015

Dr. Mark Sawyer, an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego who has helped set national vaccination policy, said the meningitis decision is more nuanced than it is for more routine vaccinations that have been around for decades.

“Physicians are struggling with this because we do not have a precise guideline. I was just at a conference where there were over 500 pediatricians in attendance and we talked about this issue for more than a half-hour because this is a real gray area,” Sawyer said.

Indeed, the CDC’s recommendation last month about the meningitis B vaccine pretty much lays the matter right in doctors’ laps.

Meanwhile, Sawyer said newer vaccines on the market lack comprehensive evidence on safety and effectiveness, compared with vaccines that have been administered to tens of millions of people over decades.

Some patients, especially those with a family history of immune-system diseases, can be at higher risk of suffering serious side effects that come with all vaccines — including seizures, life-threatening allergic reactions and paralysis.

“The best advice is for families to sit down and have a discussion about the risks and benefits,” Sawyer said. “There is simply no black-and-white answer in this case.”

Dr. Eric McDonald, medical director of the county’s Epidemiology and Immunization Services Branch, agreed.

It seems you are trying to discredit your main article which seems odd. Would you please clarify? Thank you.

Have you heard of the President's Precision Medicine Initiative? Watch what happens there closely. The impact will be enormous.

Of course, these primary sources could be reposted here without acknowledging where I read them and they would stand utterly unchallenged, but that would be dishonest, IMO.
